Robin Li Highlights AI Innovation And Cost Efficiency At World Governments Summit
At the World Governments Summit, Robin Li, Co-Founder and CEO of Baidu, highlighted the challenges and opportunities presented by rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI). He discussed how these technologies are influencing autonomous driving and cloud computing. During a conversation with Omar Sultan AlOlama, UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, Li emphasised that innovation is unpredictable.
Li noted the remarkable pace of AI development, particularly in large language models (LLMs), where costs have decreased by over 90% in just one year. This rate surpasses the historical computer revolution. Baidu has capitalised on its search engine expertise to lead in AI advancements. In March 2023, Baidu launched Ernie Bot, China's first public ChatGPT-like AI application, only three months after OpenAI's ChatGPT debut.

Baidu's approach to AI cost reduction goes beyond geopolitical factors like chip access constraints. Li cited China's ride-hailing and autonomous driving sectors as examples. Unlike Western markets with higher fares supporting expensive technologies, China's lower ride-hailing prices demand more cost-effective solutions.
Discussing Baidu's autonomous vehicle programme, Apollo Go, Li compared technological strategies. Tesla relies solely on cameras for self-driving technology. In contrast, Baidu uses a sensor-based system enabling fully driverless operations in designated areas from the start. Robotaxi services are now part of daily life in China, showcasing AI's potential in urban mobility.
Deploying an autonomous driving service in a new city takes about two weeks. However, regulatory requirements extend the full implementation process to approximately six months. This highlights the challenge governments face balancing innovation with necessary oversight.
Addressing AI Risks and Market Volatility
When questioned about AI risks, Li acknowledged concerns regarding regulatory readiness amid rapid technological evolution. While Baidu's Robotaxi service has proven safer than human drivers, regulatory hurdles remain significant challenges. He also addressed recent volatility in AI-related stock markets following open-source models like DeepSeek lowering AI deployment costs.
Despite concerns over diminishing returns on AI investments, Li remains optimistic. He encourages key players to stay at the forefront of this revolution to keep pace with rapid technological development.
Open-Source vs Closed-Source Models
On the debate between open-source and closed-source AI models, Li observed that open-source models have gained traction by accelerating adoption and fostering broader innovation. As AI continues to redefine industries worldwide, his insights at WGS underscored the need for balance between innovation, cost efficiency, and regulatory readiness.
With companies like Baidu leading the way, the future of AI promises transformation and increased accessibility for global markets.
