Road Safety And Sustainability Conference Concludes With Focus On Traffic Safety And Sustainable Solutions
The Road Safety and Sustainability Conference and Exhibition wrapped up its sessions in Riyadh on Monday. Organised by the Roads General Authority (RGA) on November 3 and 4, the event attracted over 1,000 road experts and specialists from more than 50 countries. The theme was "Innovating for Tomorrow," focusing on traffic safety and sustainable transportation strategies.
Key discussions revolved around innovative transportation solutions, government policies to reduce emissions, and improving road safety. The role of artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent transportation systems in enhancing traffic management and vehicle safety was also highlighted. Ministerial sessions facilitated the exchange of insights on advanced technologies.

The conference showcased over 130 scientific papers and 27 innovations. It concluded with recommendations to enhance AI use in smart traffic signals for better flow, reduced congestion, and lower carbon emissions. Improving intersection designs by adopting high engineering standards was also suggested to reduce accidents.
Recommendations included increasing turning radii at intersections and restricting heavy vehicles during peak hours to improve safety. Enhancing lighting at critical points using renewable energy was advised to reduce accidents, especially in rural areas and highways.
The conference emphasized implementing comprehensive traffic safety programs near schools and mosques. Regular data should be used to refine preventive measures, with increased stakeholder engagement to raise awareness. Community leaders were encouraged to participate in safety initiatives.
Improved coordination among relevant entities for effective safety programs was recommended. This includes training, awareness efforts, and essential funding. Expanding the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for optimal emergency center locations was also suggested.
Autonomous Vehicles and Infrastructure
There was a call to support autonomous vehicles by allocating dedicated lanes as a preliminary measure. Developing dynamic management systems that adapt to environmental conditions was underscored, highlighting early adoption benefits for autonomous vehicle standards.
The importance of adopting AI solutions for road safety was stressed. Monitoring traffic flows and identifying high-risk areas can enhance sustainability in traffic systems. Leveraging mobile phones for data collection and using cloud computing can reduce infrastructure costs.
The recommendations aim to improve public safety, reduce traffic accidents, and enhance quality of life. Ongoing collaboration among relevant entities is crucial for enhanced road safety and sustainable development in transportation.
Through these initiatives, the RGA seeks to improve citizens' quality of life while strengthening road safety across the Kingdom. These efforts align with Saudi Vision 2030's goals for sustainable development.
