Riyadh Mayor Highlights Cities' Vital Role In Addressing Environmental Challenges At COP16 Conference
Prince Dr. Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf, the Mayor of Riyadh, recently spoke at the opening of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. This event, held in Riyadh, gathers global leaders and experts until December 13 to enhance international efforts against drought and adopt proactive measures for this global issue.
The mayor emphasised that cities are not just centres of challenges but also platforms for innovative solutions. He praised Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for making Riyadh a leader in sustainable urban development.

The Green Riyadh Project is a key initiative aiming to plant 7.5 million trees. This project seeks to improve air quality, lower temperatures, and boost biodiversity. Another significant effort is rehabilitating Wadi Hanifa's 4,000-square-kilometre area, transforming it into an ecological restoration model and a unique environmental and tourism destination.
Additionally, over 100 major parks have been established, including King Salman Park and King Abdullah Park. These parks enhance the quality of life for citizens and residents by providing natural spaces that promote well-being.
Prince Dr. Faisal highlighted initiatives supporting afforestation through new nurseries and sustainable urban planning methods like transit-oriented development integrated with the Riyadh Metro network. These efforts aim to reduce carbon emissions and harmonise public transportation with urban spaces.
Riyadh’s environmental strategy includes more than 68 initiatives across energy, water, waste management, biodiversity, and natural aspects. These initiatives reflect Saudi Arabia’s ambitious vision for sustainable development and serve as a global model for others to follow.
International Cooperation
The mayor concluded his remarks by calling for enhanced international cooperation to tackle global environmental challenges. He underscored COP16's importance as a platform for uniting efforts, sharing knowledge, and fostering innovation to achieve a sustainable future for coming generations worldwide.
