Saudi Arabia Launches $150 Million Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership At UNCCD COP16
The Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Abdulrahman Alfadley, has introduced the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership Initiative. This initiative was announced during the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. It aims to enhance international cooperation in tackling drought challenges, especially in the most affected regions.
Eng. Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment by pledging $150 million over a decade to support this initiative. This contribution underscores the Kingdom's proactive role in addressing environmental and humanitarian issues through innovative solutions. The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts at various levels.

Saudi Arabia has been actively involved in several significant projects aimed at environmental sustainability. These include the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. Additionally, during its G20 Presidency in 2020, Saudi Arabia launched the G20 Global Land Initiative and established the Global Water Organization.
The Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership Initiative focuses on comprehensive strategies for drought preparedness. Key strategies include assessing drought risks, enhancing early warning systems, promoting sustainable agriculture, and developing drought-resistant crops. Financing improved water infrastructure and providing insurance solutions for small farmers are also priorities.
Eng. Alfadley expressed gratitude to partners supporting this initiative, including the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Economic Forum. He urged global participation from countries and organizations to strengthen capacity against drought challenges.
The initiative aims to achieve sustainable development goals by reducing social, economic, and environmental impacts on communities affected by drought. Eng. Alfadley emphasized that collaboration is crucial for addressing these challenges effectively.
This new initiative builds on Saudi Arabia's existing efforts at national, regional, and international levels. It represents a significant step towards enhancing global resilience against drought through multilateral cooperation and proactive measures.
