Riyadh Becomes First City In Middle East To Achieve Global Active City Certification

Riyadh has been awarded the Global Active City (GAC) certification, marking a first for any city in the Middle East. This recognition highlights Riyadh's efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and community well-being. The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) announced this achievement, which aligns with Saudi Vision 2030's goals of enhancing quality of life.

The certification process was spearheaded by RCRC, with significant contributions from the Ministry of Sport and the Saudi Sports for All Federation. More than 20 entities collaborated to make physical activity an integral part of Riyadh’s urban vision. This collective effort underscores the Kingdom’s leadership in improving quality of life both regionally and globally.

Riyadh Receives Global Active City Certification

The Global Active City certification is awarded by the Active Well-being Initiative, founded by TAFISA and Evaleo Organization, with support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It recognises cities that excel in creating opportunities for active living through targeted systems and standards that encourage physical activity across all societal segments.

Eng. Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Sultan, CEO of RCRC, credited the Kingdom’s leadership for their support and ambitious vision. He noted that this has enabled Riyadh to make significant progress in improving quality-of-life indicators. Eng. Al-Sultan also expressed gratitude to key partners whose contributions were vital in achieving this international recognition.

Riyadh’s approach integrates sport, health, transport, education, and urban planning sectors to create a supportive environment that enhances well-being. The strategy focuses on inclusivity for all community members by expanding access to public spaces, walking and cycling paths, sports facilities, and community programs that inspire active living.

This achievement reaffirms RCRC’s commitment to transforming Riyadh into a city where residents and visitors can lead healthier lives. The citywide strategy aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program by promoting active lifestyles through an integrated approach.

Commitment to Community Well-being

The GAC classification reflects Riyadh’s advancements in infrastructure, programs, governance systems, and policy frameworks dedicated to improving quality of life. It also acknowledges the city's measurable progress in promoting physical activity and public health while strengthening community participation and supporting sustainable well-being.

This recognition not only highlights Riyadh's achievements but also sets a precedent for other cities in the region aiming to enhance their residents' quality of life through active living initiatives.
