Riyadh Declaration On Future Of Tourism Adopted To Enhance Global Cooperation And Sustainability

The United Nations Tourism General Assembly's 26th session, held in Saudi Arabia from November 7 to 11, concluded with the adoption of the "Riyadh Declaration on the Future of Tourism." This declaration establishes a framework for international cooperation in tourism over the next five decades. It highlights Saudi Arabia's significant role in shaping global tourism and positions Riyadh as a central hub for major tourism decisions worldwide.

During this session, member states approved Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais as the new secretary-general of the UN Tourism Organization. She is the first woman and Gulf national to hold this position. Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the organization's history, reflecting a commitment to diversity and inclusion within its leadership.

The Riyadh Declaration aims to guide the tourism sector towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It focuses on sustainability, digital innovation, artificial intelligence integration, and inclusive economic growth. The declaration serves as a roadmap for enhancing international cooperation, empowering local communities, and strengthening resilience against challenges.

Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb stated, "As we conclude this session in Riyadh, we move from declaration to implementation." He emphasized that agreements signed and platforms launched will drive investments, develop human capital, advance digital transformation for small and medium enterprises, and protect cultural and environmental treasures.

The declaration outlines a unified vision promoting environmental responsibility in tourism. It reinforces tourism's role as a key driver of economic growth and cultural understanding. By fostering international collaboration, it aims to empower local communities while ensuring sustainable practices are at the forefront of industry developments.

Al-Khateeb also mentioned that Saudi Arabia will continue uniting international partners through Riyadh's hosting of the UN Tourism Regional Office for the Middle East. The goal is to achieve tangible results that ensure tourism remains a bridge between nations and a catalyst for shared prosperity.

New Initiatives Launched

The assembly also marked the launch of the "TOURISE Forum," an initiative introduced by Saudi Arabia to enhance public-private sector cooperation in global tourism. This forum will serve as a platform for leaders to collaborate on promoting digital transformation, sustainability, impactful investments, and workforce development.

"With the adoption of the Riyadh Declaration on the Future of Tourism," Al-Khateeb said, "the international community reaffirms its commitment to fully harnessing the economic and social potential of tourism in pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals." This adoption signifies global confidence in Saudi Arabia’s role as a facilitator of international dialogue within the tourism sector.

The TOURISE Forum aims to prepare the sector for future challenges by advancing innovation and collaboration between public- and private-sector leaders. This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to driving progress within global tourism through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions.
