Riyadh Art Enhances Metro Stations With Monumental Cultural Artworks
The launch of the Riyadh Metro has introduced four significant public artworks, enhancing metro stations into cultural landmarks. At the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Metro Station, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Alexander Calder’s Janey Waney stands out. This vibrant sculpture showcases Calder’s innovative approach to kinetic art, offering a lively experience for visitors.
Nearby, Robert Indiana’s LOVE (Red Outside Blue Inside), a globally recognised artwork, captivates with its vivid colours and themes of connection and hope. These masterpieces transform commuting into an artistic celebration. At the Qasr Al Hokm Downtown Metro Station, designed by Snøhetta, Ugo Rondinone’s The Sun serves as a golden focal point, symbolising energy and renewal.

Zaman Jassim’s When the Moon is Full complements this with its reflective nature, drawing inspiration from Riyadh’s rich cultural heritage. Together with the station's architectural brilliance, these artworks redefine public spaces by blending art with daily life rhythms. This creates a unique cultural experience for commuters and visitors alike.
Architect Khalid Al-Hazani, Executive Director of Riyadh Art, stated: "These permanent artworks embody our vision of transforming Riyadh into an open-air gallery that enriches the quality of life and fosters a deeper connection between people and art." He emphasised that collaborating with creative minds helps create cultural landmarks that inspire future generations.
Riyadh Art is a pioneering initiative that reimagines urban spaces while fostering creativity and enriching lives. Led by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), it is one of Saudi Vision 2030's initial Mega Projects. The program promotes cultural innovation and economic diversification, positioning Riyadh as a global hub for contemporary art and culture.
Since its inception in 2019, Riyadh Art has seamlessly integrated over 500 artworks into Saudi Arabia’s capital. It features contributions from more than 500 local and international artists. Additionally, it has hosted over 6,000 community engagement activities and attracted more than 6 million visitors.
Future Growth and Community Engagement
The program continues to expand its reach with plans to increase the number of artworks and initiatives significantly. This growth aims to foster community spirit while enriching Riyadh's identity as a vibrant global arts destination. As these efforts progress, they are expected to elevate the city’s standing on the world stage.
The integration of art into public spaces not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also encourages cultural dialogue among residents and visitors. By transforming everyday environments into artistic experiences, Riyadh Art contributes to a richer urban landscape that celebrates creativity and innovation.
