Riyadh Air Expands Fleet With Order Of 60 Airbus A321neo Planes Before 2025 Launch

Riyadh Air has confirmed an agreement to purchase 60 Airbus A321neo aircraft, marking a significant step towards its inaugural flight in 2025. This announcement was made during the eighth Future Investment Initiative (FII) conference. The deal was formalised in Riyadh with a signing between Riyadh Air's CEO Tony Douglas and Airbus' commercial aircraft CEO Christian Scherer.

The A321neo is known for its sustainability and efficiency, complementing Riyadh Air's previous wide-body jetliner order from 2023. This strategic mix of aircraft will support the airline's network expansion. In total, Riyadh Air has ordered 132 planes, showcasing an ambitious growth plan for a startup airline.

Riyadh Air Orders 60 Airbus A321neo Planes

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and chairman of Riyadh Air, expressed enthusiasm about this milestone. He stated, "This deal underscores the airline’s ambitious intentions in advance of next year’s launch as it builds a comprehensive international network and establishes Riyadh as a major strategic global aviation hub."

Tony Douglas highlighted the economic benefits of this order. He said it would bolster Saudi Arabia's aviation industry while ensuring Riyadh Air operates one of the most sustainable fleets. This aligns with Saudi Arabia's net-zero emissions goals and enhances the local aviation ecosystem.

Christian Scherer from Airbus welcomed Riyadh Air as a new customer. He noted that the A321neo would bring exceptional efficiency to operations and comfort to passengers. Scherer expressed eagerness to support Saudi aviation's growth alongside Riyadh Air.

Riyadh Air aims to be at the forefront of innovation by equipping its fleet with advanced digital features. Passengers can expect top-tier cabin interiors along with state-of-the-art entertainment and connectivity systems on board.

Economic Diversification and Tourism

The establishment of Riyadh Air is part of PIF’s strategy to diversify Saudi Arabia's economy by unlocking promising sectors locally. The airline will attract tourists worldwide to explore Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural attractions while positioning Riyadh as a key business hub globally.

Riyadh Air will also contribute significantly to the Saudi National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the National Tourism Strategy. It aims to increase air transport options, enhance cargo capacity, and boost international passenger traffic.

This agreement with Airbus marks another pivotal moment in Riyadh Air’s journey towards becoming a leading global airline, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in Saudi Arabia.
