Rio Ferdinand Settles In Dubai To Pursue New Dreams As Content Creator

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand described how life in Dubai is shaping a fresh chapter in media and business, speaking at the 1 Billion Followers Summit 2026. Ferdinand linked the emirate’s optimistic mood to his creativity, while also urging content creators to embrace new goals, social impact and personal growth beyond past achievements.

The fourth edition of the 1 Billion Followers Summit brings together a large global audience from the content sector. More than 30,000 attendees are registered, including over 15,000 content creators. The programme features more than 500 speakers with a combined following exceeding 3.5 billion, alongside more than 150 CEOs and international thought leaders.

Rio Ferdinand finds new dreams in Dubai

Ferdinand spoke during a fireside session on the summit’s second day, under the theme "Content for Good". The event, organised by the UAE Government Media Office, examines how digital influence can serve wider communities. Ferdinand explained that his own ambitions have shifted since retiring from professional football, moving towards entrepreneurship, broadcasting and structured content production.

Ferdinand said he relocated to Dubai five months ago with his wife and three children. Two older sons stayed in the UK to develop their football careers. Safety and security played a central role in the family’s decision. Ferdinand added that Dubai’s strong sense of optimism left the strongest impression, and helped guide the move.

He linked that mood to sharper thinking and better output for creative people. Ferdinand said the atmosphere in Dubai provides calm, yet also momentum. "I’ve been used to a lot of negativity and scepticism, and people looking for reasons why your idea might not work," Ferdinand said. "The optimism I find here makes me bounce out of bed ready to go every day. It gives me the energy I need right now."

Reflecting on retirement, Ferdinand admitted that leaving elite sport created doubts about his future identity. "I worried that people would remember me only for football," he said. "That wouldn’t have satisfied my ambition." Ferdinand explained that commentary work, business ventures and content projects came from a desire to redefine success beyond his playing record.

Ferdinand said that people risk becoming trapped by past achievements if they stop setting challenges. The former defender argued that progress depends on fresh targets and new fields. "You have to keep looking forward, set new goals and push into new areas, that’s how you continue to grow," he said. He encouraged creators to treat reinvention as an ongoing habit.

Humanitarian work formed another key part of Ferdinand’s discussion at the summit. Ferdinand said he created a charitable foundation around ten years ago. The organisation now supports education for about 20,000 students and also works on employment programmes. Ferdinand said this impact brings balance and fulfilment, and urged content creators to support humanitarian causes in structured ways.

1 Billion Followers Summit Dubai: support for creators and ecosystem

The fireside conversation was moderated by British entrepreneur and content creator Dr. Simon Squibb. Dr. Simon Squibb focuses on helping people launch new business ideas and ventures. Dr. Simon Squibb previously won the 1 Billion Followers Summit Award. During the session, Dr. Simon Squibb said Dubai had become a centre for ambitious founders and creative talent. "Dubai today is a destination for pioneers, dreamers and builders from all over the world," Squibb said.

The session closed with a practical example of support for emerging voices. Jordan, a football podcaster, joined the stage to describe plans for expanding a growing platform. Dr. Simon Squibb then confirmed a £20,000 investment to help develop Jordan’s online presence. The funds will equip Jordan’s London studio with updated technology, supporting higher-quality content and broader reach.
