Opportunities And Challenges For News Media In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence
A recent report by a think tank linked to Xinhua News Agency delves into the prospects and hurdles faced by global news media in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The report, "Responsibility and Mission of News Media in AI Era," was unveiled during the 6th World Media Summit in Urumqi, Xinjiang. It explores the balance between development needs and governance imperatives to leverage AI for humanity's benefit.
According to the report, 66% of surveyed media outlets worldwide view generative AI's impact on their industry positively. Furthermore, 51.2% have already begun integrating AI technologies. These findings stem from a 2024 survey involving over 1,000 respondents from 53 countries, representing diverse media platforms like newspapers, TV stations, and websites.

Media organisations anticipate that generative AI will boost news reporting's speed and efficiency. However, they also express concerns about potential credibility issues, particularly regarding "distortion and inaccuracy of news clues and materials." A notable 76.4% of respondents shared these apprehensions.
The report highlights that 85.6% of surveyed media believe better regulation is necessary for generative AI applications. This sentiment underscores the need for frameworks to manage AI's influence on news production while maintaining integrity and trustworthiness.
"AI is driving a new wave of productivity in news media," states the report. It enhances content collection, production, distribution, and evaluation processes. This technological advancement empowers both media organisations and consumers by integrating virtual interactions with real-world experiences.
Despite these advancements, the report warns against risks associated with AI misuse. False information has proliferated globally, creating an authenticity crisis due to technology limitations and users' private interests. This "collusion" effect pollutes public opinion and impacts societal discourse negatively.
Ethical Dilemmas and Governance Challenges
The widespread ethical dilemmas surrounding AI place it at a crossroads between development and governance. The "intelligence divide" could widen gaps between people, urban-rural areas, and regions globally, promoting technological dominance and exacerbating development imbalances.
The report suggests that news media should embrace social responsibilities by prioritising ethical AI use to establish robust standards. It advocates for a "people-first" approach to enhance media value through intelligent-driven initiatives while fostering dialogue for improved global governance.
"In this way, powerful media forces will unite to build a community with a shared future and contribute to a better world," concludes the report.
