GCC Workshop Discusses Enhancing Environmental Performance Index For Sustainable Development

The GCC Statistical Centre recently hosted a workshop on the GCC Environmental Performance Index. Specialists from GCC countries gathered to discuss enhancing regional cooperation in environmental statistics. The focus was on sharing best practices and building national capacities for monitoring and analysing environmental indicators.

Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, President of the Environment Authority, highlighted the workshop's significance in fostering environmental cooperation. He noted that it reflects the GCC's dedication to aligning with global environmental trends and creating a unified tool for evaluating policies. This tool aims to provide decision-makers with precise indicators that align with both national and international priorities.

Al Amri emphasised that Oman is committed to collaborating with GCC nations to boost environmental integration, aligning with Oman Vision 2040 and international commitments. The workshop facilitates expertise exchange and strengthens joint efforts to develop the GCC Environmental Performance Index, which tracks progress on environmental issues.

Intisar bint Abdullah Al Wahaibi, Director-General of the GCC Statistical Centre, explained that the index serves as a strategic tool for measuring environmental performance in GCC countries. It supports data-driven policy development by comparing performance regionally and internationally, addressing challenges like water scarcity, climate change, and air pollution.

Al Wahaibi pointed out that the index allows GCC countries to evaluate their progress, set priorities, and enhance joint action on shared environmental concerns. It provides an opportunity to compare regional performance against international standards, showcasing successes while identifying areas needing improvement for sustainable planning.

She praised the Sultanate of Oman's significant leap in the Global Environmental Performance Index, moving up over 100 places in two years to rank second in the Middle East. This achievement underscores Oman's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Commitment Across GCC Nations

The UAE led regional rankings due to its air quality management efforts and expansion of green spaces. Qatar excelled through policies reducing water consumption and conserving resources. Kuwait progressed by improving air quality and cutting emissions.

Saudi Arabia contributed by protecting marine environments, while Bahrain advanced waste management and expanded green areas. These achievements demonstrate all GCC countries' dedication to enhancing sustainability efforts and achieving positive performance indicators.

A Tool for Policy Enhancement

Al Wahaibi stressed that developing the index is not an end goal but a means to strengthen national and regional policies. It integrates environmental considerations with economic and social development, boosting global competitiveness by showcasing clear commitment to environmental protection.

The workshop underscored the importance of collaboration among GCC countries in addressing shared challenges. By working together, they aim to create effective strategies for sustainable development while maintaining alignment with international standards.
