Reef Saudi Invests SAR 86 Million In Sustainable Fisheries, Aiming For Food Security
The Sustainable Agricultural Rural Development Program, "Reef Saudi," is making significant strides in revitalising the Kingdom's fish sector. Over the past year, 2023, the program has invested SAR 86 million in 16 projects, underscoring its commitment to this vital industry. This investment highlights Reef Saudi's recognition of the crucial role fish production plays in securing the Kingdom's food supply.
Reef Saudi aims to boost domestic marine product production, reduce reliance on imports, and create employment opportunities for young Saudis in the fishing industry. Their approach is multifaceted, employing various strategies to achieve long-term sustainable growth. A key focus area is modernising fish farming techniques to improve aquaculture methods and increase overall productivity.

Empowering small-scale fishermen is another priority for Reef Saudi. The program provides essential services such as extension programs, technical support, and assistance in establishing cooperative societies. These initiatives aim to give fishermen a stronger voice and support network within the industry.
Investing in infrastructure is a crucial part of Reef Saudi's strategy. Upgrading fishermen's ports and local markets enhances efficiency, while improvements in marketing ensure that catches reach consumers quickly and profitably. The program also promotes entrepreneurship and skill development within the industry by creating fish farming incubators and offering training programs for fishermen and fish breeders.
Sustainability is a core value for Reef Saudi. The program champions environmentally responsible practices and advocates for sustainable coastal ecosystem management, particularly mangroves. In 2023, Reef Saudi implemented three new management practices focusing on responsible fisheries and ecosystem preservation.
Notable Achievements in 2023
The year 2023 was productive for Reef Saudi. A pilot project launched in October saw 100 small-scale fishermen from Jeddah, Dammam, and the Farasan Islands participating in seaweed production, a high-value product with promising potential. Additionally, the program supported women interested in seafood marketing by offering consultations and guidance.
Direct Support for Fishermen
Direct support for fishermen remains a cornerstone of the program. Reef Saudi has equipped small fishing boats with emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBs), a vital safety measure at sea. Essential engines have been provided, and maintenance centres established across various regions to ensure reliable equipment access.
Knowledge-sharing initiatives like guidance convoys focusing on livestock and fisheries were organised throughout the Kingdom. The program also developed an electronic platform specifically designed to support small fishermen.
