Community And Red Sea Global Unite For Mangrove Planting Initiative

Red Sea Global (RSG) celebrated the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem with a planting initiative. Over 100 volunteers, including local community members, Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) representatives, and students from RSG’s English for Tourism program, participated. The event was organised in collaboration with Green Umluj, a local NGO.

Raed Albasseet, Group Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer at RSG, highlighted the significance of mangrove trees in carbon sequestration. He stated that mangroves can absorb up to 5-10 times more carbon than other plants. Establishing a sustainable mangrove ecosystem is essential to RSG’s commitment to protecting and enhancing their destinations' natural environment.

Mangrove Planting Unites Community

Last year, RSG inaugurated the Red Sea Mangrove Nursery and has since transplanted one million seedlings across its destination areas. This year, they aim to grow an additional two million seedlings. This effort is part of a broader program called ‘From People to Planet,’ which encourages local community members, RSG partners, and visitors to participate in future planting initiatives.

Albasseet expressed gratitude towards the partners and local community members who have volunteered in their planting efforts. "Through meticulous site selection, we have achieved a remarkable survival rate of 99% among the transplanted mangroves across our destination areas," he said. "But beyond the brains needed to achieve this feat, it takes incredible people power. Our hope is that through our ‘From People to Planet’ program, others will support our environmental regeneration efforts."

The Red Sea welcomed its first guests last year, with three hotels now operational. Red Sea International (RSI) began receiving domestic flights regularly from September 2023. International flights started in April 2024 with a twice-weekly route between The Red Sea and Dubai International.

Future Developments at The Red Sea Destination

Upon full completion in 2030, The Red Sea destination will feature 50 resorts offering up to 8,000 hotel rooms and over 1,000 residential properties across 22 islands and six inland sites. The development will also include luxury marinas, golf courses, entertainment venues, food and beverage outlets, and leisure facilities.

This latest initiative underscores RSG's dedication to environmental sustainability while fostering community involvement in conservation efforts.
