Red Sea Global Showcases Art At Airport Reflecting Local Heritage And Culture

The Red Sea Global (RSG) has introduced two significant international artworks to celebrate the opening of the first passenger terminal at Red Sea International Airport. These artworks provide a captivating visual experience that merges local heritage with modern art. The airport's strategic location allows it to serve as a gateway, being within a three-hour flight for about 250 million people and an eight-hour flight for nearly 85% of the global population.

Since regular flights began from Jeddah and Riyadh in September 2023, and with two weekly flights from Dubai starting in April 2024, the airport has become a crucial entry point to Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast. As part of its phased opening, the airport now greets visitors with specially crafted artworks that capture the essence of the region.

"Shuttle," one of the installations, stands six meters high and nine meters wide, weighing almost one ton. It is located at the airport’s reception center. This piece features dynamic screens that mimic wind movements and Red Sea water flows, blending nature with advanced technology. The artwork is inspired by sadu, a traditional craft recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.

The second artwork, "Glass Symphony," consists of four glass sculptures placed throughout the terminal. These sculptures reflect the beauty of coral reefs and seagrasses found in the Red Sea. With vibrant hues and detailed craftsmanship, they emphasize biodiversity and highlight the importance of conserving ocean treasures.

Dalia Islam, Director of Arts and Culture at RSG, stated that these artworks offer a glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s coasts, culture, and natural environment. They aim to inspire both visitors and locals by showcasing the beauty and distinctiveness of the Red Sea. "These works open a window onto the Kingdom’s coasts, culture, and natural environment," she said.

The installations also align with Red Sea Global’s 2024 initiative to restore seagrasses using advanced ecological methods. This initiative underscores their commitment to preserving marine life while promoting cultural appreciation through art.

The combination of strategic location and artistic expression positions Red Sea International Airport as a vital hub for travelers worldwide. It not only facilitates travel but also enriches visitor experiences by connecting them with Saudi Arabia's rich cultural tapestry.
