Reconstruction And Stability Of Syria Is Essential For Humanitarian And Security Needs In The Region

Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), highlighted the importance of Syria's reconstruction and stability for regional security. Speaking at the ninth Brussels Conference on Syria, he emphasized the GCC's commitment to supporting initiatives that guide Syria towards recovery, focusing on justice, development, and stability. Albudaiwi stated, "We are meeting today to send a message of hope to the Syrian people that the world has not forgotten them, and that we stand by them at this pivotal moment."

Albudaiwi noted recent rapid developments in Syria necessitate a unified stance to maintain its sovereignty. He stressed that a stable Syria benefits not only Syrians but also the Gulf, Arab, and international communities. The GCC countries have consistently supported Syria based on this belief. The council welcomed steps ensuring civilian safety and preserving Syrian state institutions while emphasizing that weapon control is crucial for restoring stability.

Syria's Reconstruction is Key for Regional Stability

The GCC has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to support Syria. Albudaiwi mentioned his visit to Damascus with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Al Yahya as part of these efforts. This visit followed agreements made during a consultative meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council. The council underscored the importance of sending a unified Gulf message to back Syria and show solidarity with its people during this critical phase.

In addition to diplomatic visits, the GCC participated in a high-level ministerial conference on Syria hosted by France on February 13. This conference focused on supporting a comprehensive transitional process and identifying essential needs for restoring stability in Syria. Prior meetings in Riyadh discussed lifting sanctions and providing humanitarian and economic support for reconstruction.

The GCC has delivered substantial humanitarian aid to Syria, recognizing the country's suffering. Hundreds of tons of medical and food supplies have been sent via air and land bridges. Volunteer programs in health sectors have benefited tens of thousands, alongside training programs for medical specialists aimed at bolstering Syria’s health sector capabilities.

Albudaiwi welcomed positive actions by the United States, European Union, and United Kingdom in easing some sanctions on Syria. He highlighted a joint meeting between the Ministerial Council and Syrian foreign minister discussing ways to assist Syrians at this crucial stage. The GCC continues urging partners to provide necessary support for Syrian recovery.

Commitment to Political Solutions

The GCC remains committed to political solutions for Syria's challenges. Albudaiwi recalled an extraordinary session held by the GCC Ministerial Council in Kuwait affirming support for comprehensive political settlements. The council backed UN Secretary-General’s call for establishing a UN mission aiding Syria's transitional process, stressing international community involvement in rebuilding efforts.

Albudaiwi concluded by condemning Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and rejecting any demographic changes imposed externally or regionally within Syria. He reiterated that Golan remains Syrian Arab land despite occupation attempts altering its identity.

The ongoing efforts by the GCC highlight their dedication to ensuring peace and stability in Syria through coordinated international support and humanitarian aid initiatives.
