RDIA Unveils Strategic Initiatives To Enhance Environmental Sustainability And Essential Needs
The Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDIA) has unveiled several strategic initiatives during Sustainability Innovation Week. These initiatives aim to enhance the research and innovation ecosystem's role in tackling environmental sustainability challenges and ensuring essential needs are met. This aligns with Saudi Arabia's broader goals for water and food security.
Among the key initiatives is the launch of national missions focused on environmental sustainability and essential needs. The targets include achieving over 50% self-sufficiency in food production by 2040. Additionally, there is a goal to reduce reliance on non-renewable water sources by 90% and cut water production costs by half by 2035.

A National Roadmap for Sustainability and Supply of Essential Needs Innovation was introduced. This roadmap guides national research and innovation efforts to address both local and global environmental challenges while enhancing water and food security. It encourages collaboration among government bodies, private sector partners, and academic institutions to create a cohesive framework for these objectives.
The RDIA also launched the "National Research and Development Alliances Focused on Water and Food." This initiative brings together 60 leading organizations from Saudi Arabia and around the world. It aims to align research efforts and foster collaboration to tackle global challenges in water and food security, ensuring their sustainability according to national priorities.
To acknowledge outstanding contributions in research and innovation, the "Sustainability Research Excellence Award" was established. This award celebrates individuals who have significantly advanced knowledge both locally and internationally. Among those honored were Professors Iqbal Ismail, Sameer Al-Sulaiman, Mohammed Al-Wabel, Youssef Al-Hafiz, Abdullah Al-Hamdan, Noureddine Ghaffour, Syed Zubair, Ahmed Al-Amoudi, Abdullah Asiri, Omar Abu Rizaiza, Ibrahim Al-Mu’taz, and Mark Tester.
In addition to recognizing excellence in research, the RDIA announced an allocation of SAR 120 million for research grants in 2024. These grants are intended to stimulate innovation and support projects that align with national sustainability priorities.
Research Grants Programs
The RDIA introduced the 2025 Research Grants Programs for Sustainability. These programs focus on enabling researchers and innovators to contribute to food, water, and environmental security. They include the Saudi Basic Sciences Program, the Saudi Applied Research and Technology Program, the Saudi Emerging Investigator Program, and the Entrepreneurial Research Program.
In a celebration of innovation during Sustainability Innovation Week, leading companies such as ACWA Power, the National Agricultural Development Company (NADEC), and the National Environmental Recycling Company (Tadweer) were recognized. They were honored for their dedication to transforming ambitious solutions into practical applications that support Saudi Arabia's water and food security objectives.
The initiatives launched by RDIA reflect a strong commitment to advancing research that addresses critical environmental challenges while supporting national priorities in sustainability. By fostering collaboration across various sectors and recognizing excellence in research contributions, these efforts aim to drive significant progress toward achieving long-term goals in water and food security.
