Razan Al Mubarak Leads IUCN Council Meeting In Guatemala To Discuss Nature Conservation Strategy
Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, who leads the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), recently chaired the 112th IUCN Council meeting in Antigua, Guatemala. This gathering, from 28th to 31st January, marked a crucial point for the organisation. Delegates evaluated the achievements of 2024 and planned for 2025 and beyond.
The IUCN's long-term strategy, titled "Unite for Nature: On the Path to 2045," was a key topic. This document outlines the organisation's goals and includes a financial plan to achieve them. It will be voted on at the IUCN 2025 World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi. The strategy has been refined through online consultations and regional forums held last year.

Razan Al Mubarak emphasised the importance of this strategic vision, stating, "This is a significant step forward for IUCN." She highlighted the global focus on nature's role in planetary health and climate change. The strategy incorporates valuable input from members, showcasing their commitment to maintaining IUCN's leadership in conservation efforts.
During the meeting, delegates also examined the draft Programme of Work for 2026-2029. This programme is set for Council approval in May 2025. Preparations were finalised for the World Conservation Congress in Abu Dhabi, an event that occurs every four years and attracts over 15,000 participants from various sectors.
On 31st January, Razan Al Mubarak and IUCN Council members visited Guatemala City’s Congress of the Republic. They observed as lawmakers voted on creating a 7,000-hectare marine protected area to safeguard diverse coral reefs. During this visit, Guatemala’s Environmental Legislative Agenda was presented.
Later that day, an IUCN delegation attended a ceremony at Guatemala’s National Palace hosted by President Bernardo Arevalo and Environment Minister Patricia Orantes. Discussions included Guatemala’s environmental plan and future projects with IUCN over five years.

In recognition of her contributions to conservation, Razan Al Mubarak received the Keys to Antigua from Ricardo Quiñónez, Mayor of Antigua. This honour acknowledged her leadership in promoting nature conservation globally.
