Ras Al Khaimah Ruler H.H. Sheikh Saud Engages With Cultural Heritage During Visit To Guangzhou
H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, recently visited Guangdong Province in China. During his four-day trip, he explored the cultural district of Guangzhou and attended a Canton opera performance. This visit was part of an initiative to sign a cooperation agreement between Ras Al Khaimah and Guangdong, China's most populous province.
The visit included an invitation for Sheikh Saud to explore Yong Qing Fang Street, known for its historical significance. Located in Guangzhou's Liwan District, this street showcases Lingnan architecture typical of southern China. It features many historic buildings with pagoda roofs and is a hub for tea houses and book stores.
The Canton Opera performance provided a glimpse into traditional Guangzhou culture and music. This art form is central to the city's lively artistic environment. Sheikh Saud's experience highlighted the importance of cultural understanding in building strong partnerships.
Sheikh Saud emphasised the value of respecting cultural traditions when forming long-term partnerships. He stated, "To build strong, long-term partnerships, it is essential to understand and respect the culture and traditions of the people we engage with. A truly successful partnership goes beyond transactions – it is rooted in meaningful connections, mutual respect and a deep appreciation for each other’s heritage."
Guangdong Province boasts a population exceeding 126 million people and holds the title of China's largest provincial economy. In 2023, its GDP reached US$1.9 trillion (AED 6.98 trillion). The province is a major manufacturing centre with key sectors including electronics, automotive, textiles, pharmaceuticals, high-tech industries, finance, and real estate.
The visit underscored the potential for collaboration between Ras Al Khaimah and Guangdong by embracing cultural diversity. Such engagement can lead to innovation and sustainable growth through mutual respect and understanding.
This journey not only strengthened ties but also showcased how cultural appreciation can unlock opportunities for collaboration between regions with diverse heritages.
