Ras Al Khaimah Launches Innovative Correctional Social Club To Enhance Inmate Rehabilitation Efforts
The Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research, in partnership with Ras Al Khaimah Police General Headquarters, has launched the Social and Educational Club at the Emirate’s Correctional and Rehabilitation Facility. This initiative marks a significant move towards reform-focused rehabilitation. The event was attended by prominent figures such as Mohammed Omran, Dr. Natasha Ridge, Brigadier Dr. Tariq Mohammed bin Saif, and Brigadier Abdullah Mohammed Al Haimer.
The Club represents one of the first initiatives of its kind in the UAE, offering a comprehensive model that integrates educational, cultural, psychological, and social support services within a dedicated space. It aims to empower inmates by providing access to knowledge, mental health support, and skills development crucial for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

A modern library is central to the Club's offerings, featuring over 9,000 titles managed via the Koha Library Management System. This digital platform allows for efficient cataloguing and real-time resource access, benefiting both inmates and staff by fostering a structured learning environment. The library's design encourages engagement through inviting reading areas and modern furnishings.
The facility also includes a training room equipped with laptops, individual workstations, and an interactive smart screen with internet access. This setup supports both virtual and in-person learning sessions. Additionally, a private consultation room offers confidential psychological counselling to aid personal growth.
Brigadier Abdullah Al Haimer highlighted the transformative nature of this initiative: "This Club marks a transformative chapter in our correctional efforts. We are not only offering resources but building a space where dignity, self-improvement, and community values are central to rehabilitation." The Club operates through collaboration between facility staff and trained inmate volunteers alongside the Al Qasimi Foundation team.
Mohammed Omran reflected on the broader impact of this initiative: "This initiative is a reflection of Ras Al Khaimah’s belief in second chances, in education as a vehicle for hope, and in the ability of individuals to grow in an environment where dignity, self-empowerment and human rights are paramount." His words underscore the commitment to progressive correctional practices.
Commitment to Human Rights
The inauguration highlights Ras Al Khaimah’s dedication to humane correctional practices and human rights protection. It sets an example nationally for integrating education and mental well-being into correctional facilities. This approach demonstrates how institutional collaboration can drive meaningful change.
Dr. Natasha Ridge emphasised the educational significance: "This is more than a physical space – it is a symbol of inclusion and hope. By investing in knowledge and wellbeing for all members of our community, Ras Al Khaimah is ensuring a better future not only for those inside but also for society at large." Her statement reflects the broader societal benefits envisioned by this initiative.
