Qatar Ranks As Safest Country For Expatriates In The Middle East, Eighth Globally: Report

Qatar has emerged as the safest country for expatriates in the Middle East and ranks eighth globally, as per a recent study by the Expatriate Group. This global entity specializes in providing international healthcare insurance to expats around the world.

The detailed report evaluated 128 countries using various metrics including the Global Peace Index, Crime Rate Index, and the percentage risk of natural disasters to establish a safety score for each nation, according to a report in Peninsula Qatar.

The methodology behind the ranking involved assigning scores to countries based on political stability, crime levels, and the likelihood of natural disasters. These scores were then aggregated to determine the overall ranking, highlighting the safest places for expatriates. Qatar's position on this list is notable, especially considering it is one of only two countries outside Europe, alongside Singapore, featured in the top 10 for safety.

The Expatriate Group's report specifically mentions Qatar's exceptionally low crime rate, positioning it second globally. Strict law enforcement and stringent laws contribute to minimizing violent and petty crimes, creating a safe environment for residents and expatriates alike.

"Coming eighth overall, Qatar ranks second for the lowest crime rate in the world. The country has strict laws and strong law enforcement, which contribute to an environment where violent crime is rare and petty crimes, such as theft, are infrequent. This sense of safety extends to public spaces, which helps make Qatar a comfortable place to live and work," the document elaborates.

Furthermore, the nation stands out for its political stability thanks to effective governance and a focus on economic development and international relations.

Qatar's geographical location shields it from common natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods. Although sandstorms occur, they are managed efficiently to ensure public safety.

"The country is not prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, or flooding, though the arid climate does mean there are occasional sandstorms. However, these are generally well-anticipated and managed, with clear guidelines put in place to ensure public safety," the report states.

In the realm of safety, Qatar has made significant investments in security technology, such as surveillance systems and facial recognition software. This infrastructure supports a proactive approach to threat identification and prevention. The country's police force is notable for its efficiency and training, upholding a zero-tolerance policy towards crime which ensures a swift response to any criminal activity.

Qatar's multicultural society is marked by harmony and mutual respect, underpinned by government efforts to promote tolerance. This atmosphere minimizes social conflicts. Additionally, the nation has launched several initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and empowerment of women, including dedicated police stations, legal protections against gender-based violence, and measures to encourage female participation in the workforce.

In terms of regional rankings within the GCC, Bahrain follows Qatar closely, occupying the 13th spot. They are succeeded by Kuwait in 15th place, Oman at 24th, the UAE at 30th, and Saudi Arabia at 54th. Qatar's commendable Crime Index score of 16.0 further attests to its standing as one of the world's countries with the lowest crime rates.

Qatar’s reputation as a secure destination for both residents and visitors has been consistently recognized over the years. This report by the Expatriate Group reaffirms the nation’s commitment to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for its expatriate community.

The GCC nation's multifaceted approach to ensuring safety has clearly paid dividends, securing its position as a leading safe haven for expatriates in the Middle East and globally. Its effective governance, low crime rates, and initiatives aimed at fostering a cohesive society have set a standard for others to follow, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a secure and vibrant place to live and work.
