Qatar Targets 100% Electric Public Transport System By 2030

The Ministry of Transport (MoT) is steadfast in its commitment to fully transition Qatar's public transport bus system to electric by the year 2030. At an event by the Business Class Advertising Group during Expo 2023 Doha, Hamad Ali Al Marri, Director of the Land Transport Licensing Department at MoT, shared that the operation rate of electric buses is now approximately 70%. This milestone is supported by a comprehensive infrastructure, designed to save energy and fuel, reduce emissions, and lower the country's carbon footprint, ultimately enhancing the quality of life.

Along with this announcement, the Minister of Municipality, H.E. Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al Attiyah, introduced a publication titled "Environmental Sustainability in Qatar... Achievements and Challenges". This book, sponsored by the Ministry of Municipality and strategically by MoT, delves into Qatar's sustainability achievements across economic, social, and environmental spheres. It also analyzes the capability of Qatari institutions to pursue sustainable development and tackle climate change, highlighting the national strategy on environment and climate change, the progress of sustainable cities in Qatar, and the Ministry of Municipality's efforts in these areas.

The Minister further recognised several leading companies and institutions with Excellence in Sustainability Awards, acknowledging their commitment to environmental sustainability standards. Among the awardees were Barwa Real Estate, Al Fardan Group, Al Abdulghani Motors, Mawani Qatar, Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Katara Hospitality, Mowasalat (Karwa), Nasser Bin Khaled (NBK), QTerminals, Ahli Bank, and Ansar Group, each leading in their respective sectors.

In a parallel acknowledgment, the Ministry of Transport received an accolade for its significant contributions to sustainability and the enhancement of air, sea, and maritime transportation sustainability. Al Marri highlighted the Ministry's efforts in developing infrastructure projects and support services for the transportation sector. "These efforts have resulted in an integrated, interconnected, and sustainable transportation system, positioning Qatar as a leader in the global transportation sector and facilitating the hosting of major international events while providing an environmentally friendly transportation experience," Al Marri stated.

Abdullah Al Jassim, General Manager of Business Class Advertising, emphasized the importance of the "Environmental Sustainability in Qatar. Achievements and Challenges" book, describing it as a crucial resource that underscores Qatar's commitment to sustainability. This document serves as a testament to the nation's dedication to ensuring the long-term environmental, social, and economic well-being of its people.
