Qatar Unveils Bid To Host The 2036 Olympic And Paralympic Games

The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has announced its intention to bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. If successful, Qatar would become the first nation in the Middle East and North Africa to host these prestigious events. The country previously hosted the men's FIFA World Cup in 2022 and is preparing to host the Asian Games in 2030.

QOC President Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani stated that Qatar already has "95% of the required sports infrastructure" needed for the Olympics. He added that a national plan is in place to ensure all facilities are fully prepared. This plan aligns with Qatar's long-term vision for a sustainable legacy across social, economic, and environmental aspects.

The QOC is engaged in ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the selection process for the 2036 Games host city. This move comes as other countries like Indonesia, Turkey, India, and Chile have confirmed their bids. Additionally, nations such as Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Egypt, Italy, Germany, Denmark, and Canada are considering entering the race.

Qatar’s bid for the 2036 Games is driven by a clear purpose — to use the Games as a platform for national development — focusing on engaging youth, sharing knowledge, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainability to make the event align with both Olympic and Qatar’s national values.

Unlike in the past, the candidate nations and cities are no longer required to make their bids public under the IOC’s reformed selection process.

The QOC highlighted that hosting the Olympics would further develop skills and create economic opportunities for its citizens. The committee emphasised that their journey towards hosting these games builds upon their experience from past events like the FIFA World Cup. They aim to unite people globally under Olympic values.

In addition to Qatar's bid, several other countries are vying for the opportunity to host the 2036 Olympics. Confirmed bids have come from cities such as Istanbul in Turkiye, Ahmedabad in India, Nusantara in Indonesia, and Santiago in Chile. Meanwhile, countries like Saudi Arabia and South Korea are also contemplating bids.

The upcoming Summer Olympics will take place in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032. As various nations express interest in hosting future games, competition remains fierce among potential hosts worldwide.

Qatar's ambition to host the Olympics reflects its growing influence over major sporting events within the region. With Saudi Arabia set to hold football's World Cup in 2034, Middle East countries continue expanding their presence on global sports stages through strategic planning and investment initiatives aimed at fostering development across multiple sectors while promoting regional unity through shared experiences at international competitions like these prestigious games themselves!
