Qais Al Dhalai Secures Second Term As Asia Rugby President With Strong Union Support

The Asia Rugby Annual General Meeting took place on Friday, 8th November 2024. During this event, Qais Al Dhalai, Deputy Chairman of the UAE Rugby Federation, was re-elected as President of Asia Rugby for a second term. Al Dhalai received strong backing from 29 unions, highlighting his role in advancing rugby throughout Asia. He will also represent Asia Rugby on World Rugby’s Council.

Al Dhalai secured 17 votes, surpassing Ada Milby, President of the Philippine Rugby Union, who garnered 11 votes. Terence Khoo from Singapore was chosen as Vice-President. Al Dhalai is also preparing to run for a position on the World Rugby Executive Board on 14th November in Dublin, Ireland.

Al Dhalai Re-Elected as Asia Rugby President

Reflecting on his re-election, Al Dhalai expressed gratitude to the UAE’s leadership for supporting young Emirati sports professionals. He acknowledged their encouragement, which allows Emirati youth to assume leadership roles in continental and international organisations.

According to Asian Rugby, Al Dhalai has led the organisation through significant achievements during his first term. He aims to continue promoting rugby at all levels across the region. His re-election signifies member unions' trust in his dedication and vision for rugby's future in Asia.

Under Al Dhalai's guidance, Asia Rugby has expanded its membership within the Regional Governing Body. Participation and strategic partnerships have increased, strengthening rugby’s presence. "I am honoured and humbled to have been re-elected as President of Asia Rugby," said Qais Al Dhalai after the announcement.

He added that his journey so far has been inspiring and he looks forward to advancing rugby across the continent. He thanked the former Executive Committee for their hard work and support. His re-election reflects confidence in his vision for rugby's growth across Asia.

Al Dhalai emphasised that their focus will remain on strengthening the rugby community at all levels. This includes world-class competitions and development programmes throughout the region. The support from member unions underscores their belief in his leadership and commitment to rugby's future in Asia.
