Public Bus Service In Dubai Expands To Cover 88% Of Urban Areas With Enhanced Connectivity
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted the significant impact of smart systems and artificial intelligence on the public bus service. These technologies have boosted operational efficiency, reduced costs, improved schedule adherence, and increased customer satisfaction. Currently, the bus network covers 88% of Dubai with a fleet of 1,390 buses completing 11,000 trips daily over 333,000 kilometres.
Dubai's mass transit system is characterised by its multi-modal integration, serving as a central transportation option for residents. This network has transformed how people travel across the emirate. The RTA's strategic plans focus on seamless integration to ensure efficient mobility throughout Dubai. These plans include expanding road networks and enhancing pedestrian and cycling facilities to connect various transport modes.

The RTA aims to enhance public transport connectivity by integrating buses with the Dubai Metro. Buses act as crucial links to other transport modes like trams and taxis. This year, RTA plans to expand dedicated lanes for buses and taxis by adding six new lanes totalling 13 kilometres. This expansion will increase passenger numbers by 10%, improve bus arrival times by 42%, reduce journey times by 41%, and alleviate traffic congestion.
In recent years, the RTA has introduced a new generation of bus stations with innovative designs that incorporate modern engineering solutions. These stations aim to meet transport integration standards and enhance connectivity across the city. They provide easy access for pedestrians and cyclists while ensuring inclusivity for People of Determination.
The RTA operates a fleet of modern buses that adhere to European low-carbon emission standards (Euro 6). These buses offer spacious seating, advanced safety features, and are designed for comfort and accessibility. They include low-entry designs for easy boarding and spaces dedicated to People of Determination, ensuring high-quality service for all users.
In 2024, public bus usage reached 188 million passengers, an 8% rise from 2023. The fleet operates on 187 routes including urban, rural, metro link routes, intercity routes, and seasonal routes like those to Global Village. Buses make over 11,000 trips daily covering more than 333,000 kilometres while transporting over half a million riders each day.
Technological Enhancements in Public Transport
The activation of the bus priority system at traffic signals has improved arrival times by up to 12%. Last year saw the launch of nine express bus routes along with nine metro link routes and four new taxi routes in high-demand areas. The RTA regularly reviews bus service routes based on data analysis and passenger feedback.
The RTA's plans also involve developing road networks alongside crossings as part of their comprehensive mass transit system strategy. This includes metro expansions as well as marine transport options. Policies are in place to encourage reduced reliance on private vehicles in favour of public transport or shared mobility solutions.
The design of new bus stations addresses first- and last-mile connectivity needs by integrating essential elements like bus stops, cycling lanes, pedestrian crossings, landscaping specific to areas served by these stations along with bike racks encouraging walking or personal mobility options.
This integrated approach has reshaped transportation culture in Dubai encouraging residents from all demographics towards embracing public transport options available within this comprehensive network overseen strategically through operational planning efforts led by RTA officials such as Mattar Al Tayer himself who remains committed towards enhancing overall user experience across different modes offered under their jurisdictional purview today onwards into future developments anticipated ahead too!
