Prophet's Mosque Doors Showcase Saudi Arabia's Commitment To Islamic Heritage

The Prophet's Mosque, a site of immense historical and religious significance, has been the focus of meticulous care and development throughout various Islamic eras. This dedication has seen a significant evolution during the Saudi era, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's rulers prioritizing the mosque's architecture and development since the country's unification. Their efforts aim to facilitate worship and ensure a conducive environment for visitors and worshippers alike.

Among the mosque's architectural marvels are its doors, which are not only functional but hold deep significance. Presently, the mosque boasts 100 doors that are strategically distributed around its premises, including its four sides, expansions, and roof. These doors are managed by a dedicated team of 280 employees who ensure their operation round the clock during Ramadan.

The expansions initiated by the late King Fahd bin Abdulaziz introduced seven wide entrances to the mosque. These include three on the northern side and two each on the eastern and western sides. Each entrance features seven doors, arranged with two spaced apart and five in between them. The dimensions of each door are notable: three meters in width, six meters in height, and over 13 centimeters in thickness, with each door weighing 1.25 tons.

These doors stand out for their ease of use, thanks to flexible handles that allow them to be opened and closed with just one hand. Their construction involved over 1,600 cubic meters of teak wood and more than 1,500 gilded, engraved pieces that form the name "Mohammed, Messenger of Allah" in a circular mold. The process of crafting these doors was intricate, involving gilded copper from France and high-quality teak wood sourced from America. The wood underwent a drying process in Barcelona, Spain, for no more than five months before being precisely cut with laser-equipped saws. The copper pieces were then cast, polished, coated with gold, and meticulously attached to the doors using an ancient interlocking method without nails.

This attention to detail underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving the Prophet's Mosque's architectural integrity and enhancing its facilities for visitors. The doors not only serve a practical purpose but also symbolize the Kingdom's ongoing dedication to providing a serene and welcoming environment for worshippers to perform their rituals with ease and peace of mind.
