Saudi Ministry Advocates For Responsible Consumption To Slash Meat Waste

In a significant move towards bolstering sustainability and food security within the Kingdom, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture has underscored the necessity of fostering responsible consumption habits to mitigate meat loss and waste. This initiative aligns with the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to enhance the nation's agricultural sector's efficiency and sustainability. The call to action comes in light of alarming statistics revealing substantial meat waste annually across various categories, including poultry, sheep, camel, fish, and other meats.

According to recent figures, the Kingdom faces a considerable challenge with poultry meat waste reaching 444,000 tons, sheep meat waste at 22,000 tons, camel meat at 13,000 tons, fish at 69,000 tons, and other meats totaling 41,000 tons. Addressing this issue head-on, the ministry advocates for heightened public awareness on the critical importance of minimizing meat loss through responsible consumption practices among both citizens and residents.

The ministry views these measures as vital components in tackling the prevalent issue of meat loss and waste. By encouraging such practices, it aims to significantly reduce food waste and advance towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), all while conserving natural resources for future generations. Furthermore, the ministry stresses the importance of thoughtful food purchasing that reflects the actual needs and size of a family. It advises against the tendency to prepare an excessive variety of dishes in a single meal which often leads to unnecessary waste.

Moreover, innovative solutions such as devising recipes from leftovers, cautious engagement with commercial advertisements to avoid impulsive buying, and proper packaging of surplus food for reuse or distribution to those in need are highly encouraged. These practices not only contribute to reducing waste but also foster a culture of sustainability and mindful consumption across the Kingdom.

In its commitment to this cause, the ministry has launched several initiatives aimed at raising public awareness about the significance of reducing food waste. These include educational campaigns on efficient food storage and cooling techniques and improving meat quality preservation methods. Through these concerted efforts, the ministry endeavors to instill sustainable consumption behaviors among the populace, thereby supporting the Kingdom's broader environmental and food security objectives as outlined in Saudi Vision 2030.
