Prince Saad Bin Saud Palace In Diriyah Reframes A Story Of Passion And Innovation For New Audiences

Visitors to Hal Al-Qusoor, one of the main programs of Diriyah Season 25/26, walk into the open courtyard of Prince Saad bin Saud Palace in historic At-Turaif. They pause to study the Najdi architectural details and the modern scenography that links private life with social roles.

Diriyah Season 25/26 acts as a long-term cultural platform that highlights Diriyah’s role as the cradle of the Saudi State. Its activities present authentic Najdi values, Saudi hospitality and local social customs within an international event that unites culture, heritage and tourism.

Prince Saad Palace Reframes Najdi Heritage

During the tour inside Prince Saad bin Saud Palace, guests follow an interactive sensory route based on light and sound. The audio-visual scenes recount the story of the prince, explain the thinking behind the palace’s construction, and underline dedication to defending the homeland and loyalty to Diriyah.

The palace walls are illuminated in sequence, giving the feeling that stone is speaking with memory. At the centre of the experience, the prince’s recorded words are heard without alteration: "Allah has commanded us to build the earth and perfect our work." The performance continues until his final statement fills the courtyard: "This is my home… and I am Saad."

The palace presents the rhythm of Prince Saad bin Saud’s family life through its spaces. Rooms for living, reception majlis areas and the rooftop are all arranged around a main central courtyard. The layout shows how residents of Diriyah shaped buildings to suit climate, social needs and long-term structural sustainability.

One of the most recognisable features of Prince Saad bin Saud Palace is the mosque constructed alongside the main building. The entire complex uses mudbricks, mud, stone and tamarisk wood. These traditional materials again highlight local building knowledge in At-Turaif and the broader Diriyah area.

Diriyah Season 25/26 and the story of Prince Saad bin Saud Palace

Prince Saad bin Saud Palace stands on high ground in At-Turaif District, directly next to the Palace of Prince Nasser bin Saud bin Abdulaziz on the northern side. The complex covers about 1,000 square metres and was built in the 19th century as the prince’s residence.

Prince Saad bin Saud was born near the end of the reign of Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammad, the prince’s grandfather. Historical accounts state that Prince Saad bin Saud commanded a military unit positioned in northern Diriyah and fought strongly against Ottoman forces during the Siege of Diriyah.

Diriyah Season 25/26 highlighting Najdi design innovation

The refined architectural taste of Prince Saad bin Saud appears in many elements of the palace. The design differs from prevailing styles of the period, while still meeting essential residential needs. Ventilation shafts and window openings were created in a distinctive manner known in Diriyah as "Al-Luhooj". The approach later spread widely across the city.

Architectural choices at the palace also illustrate how Diriyah’s inhabitants addressed airflow, shading and privacy. These solutions balanced comfort and practicality while respecting Najdi building traditions. The current presentation during Diriyah Season 25/26 connects those historical details with contemporary visitors through curated lighting and narrative techniques.
