Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Project Revitalises Al-Zubair Bin Al-Awam Mosque's Heritage In Najran

The Al-Zubair bin Al Awam Mosque, situated near Najran's historic emirate palace, is currently undergoing restoration. This effort is part of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project for the Development of Historic Mosques. The initiative seeks to correct past renovations that used non-authentic materials, aiming to restore the mosque's original heritage style reflective of the Najran Region.

Built in 1386 AH, the mosque covers 1,436 square meters and can host up to 1,000 worshippers. Traditional construction methods were employed, using horizontal courses and roofing made from palm trunks, fronds, and tamarisk trees. The restoration will use these same natural materials to maintain its unique architectural character.

Revitalising Al-Zubair bin Al-Awam Mosque

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Project aims to restore 30 mosques across all 13 regions of Saudi Arabia in its second phase. This includes six mosques in Riyadh, five in Makkah, four in Madinah, three in Aseer, two each in the Eastern Region, Al-Jouf, and Jazan, and one each in Northern Borders, Tabuk, Al-Baha, Najran, Hail, and Qassim.

The project's first phase successfully restored 30 historic mosques across 10 regions. It balances traditional and modern construction standards to ensure sustainability while preserving heritage characteristics. Saudi companies specializing in heritage restoration are leading these efforts.

The project has four strategic objectives: restoring historic mosques for worship; preserving their architectural authenticity; highlighting the Kingdom's cultural heritage; and enhancing their religious and cultural significance. It aligns with Vision 2030 by integrating architectural heritage into modern mosque designs.

The Al-Zubair bin Al Awam Mosque is notable as the first mosque in Najran's old popular market area. Its restoration under this project ensures that its historical essence is preserved while meeting contemporary standards.
