AlBaha's Prickly Pear Initiative Transforms Agriculture And Local Economy
The initiative to cultivate prickly pears in AlBaha has transformed the region. It has moved from private farm management to establishing a specialised city for scientific research and product development. The region's mountains, terraces, valleys, and plains are now covered with green, yellow, and red prickly pear trees due to daily rainfall.
Eng. Fahd Muftah Al-Zahrani, director-general of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture Branch in AlBaha Region, highlighted the ministry's support. They have allocated resources for a production line and an oil press to benefit all farmers. Efforts are ongoing to create an integrated line for full utilisation of the product.

Dr. Faeq Al-Ghamdi, the initiative's owner, stated that the goal is regional leadership in prickly pear cultivation and production. The aim is also self-sufficiency and potential export capabilities. This initiative seeks to enhance local agriculture while opening doors to international markets.
Dr. Nadia Saeed Al-Zahrani from AlBaha University noted that prickly pears come in various colours from green to red, with red being sweeter. She emphasised their health benefits due to essential nutrients like fibre, minerals, and vitamins E, C, and K. These nutrients can improve skin appearance and may delay aging signs.
Additionally, Dr. Nadia mentioned that the fibre in prickly pears might aid weight loss and regulate blood sugar and fat levels. This makes them a valuable addition to a healthy diet.
The establishment of an integrated prickly pear city is a significant step forward. This city will work in collaboration with the local prickly pear association to maximise benefits for farmers and consumers alike.
This initiative not only supports local farmers but also promotes sustainable agricultural practices in AlBaha. By focusing on scientific research and product development, it aims to create a thriving industry around prickly pears.
The success of this initiative highlights the potential of agricultural innovation in transforming regional economies. With continued support and development, AlBaha could become a leading hub for prickly pear cultivation and production.
