7-Month Pregnant Arab Athlete Makes History At Paris 2024 Olympics
Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez has made headlines at the Paris 2024 Olympics by competing while seven months pregnant. Her participation highlights a blend of athletic skill and maternal strength, showcasing the human spirit's resilience and determination.
On the third day of the Games, Hafez faced American seventh seed Elizabeth Tartakovsky at the Grand Palais. Wearing her electrically conductive jacket and mesh wire mask, she won 15-13, advancing to the next round. "What appears to you as two players on the podium, they were actually three! It was me, my competitor, and my yet-to-come to our world, little baby!" Hafez shared on Instagram.
Dual Challenges of Sport and Pregnancy
Hafez's journey to the Olympics involved balancing intense training with the demands of pregnancy. "My baby and I had our fair share of challenges, be it both physical and emotional," she wrote. "The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but having to fight to keep the balance of life and sports was nothing short of strenuous, however worth it."
This year's Olympics features a record number of mothers competing. For the first time, the Olympic village includes a nursery for athletes with children. This initiative also provides hotel rooms for breastfeeding athletes, reflecting broader support for parent-athletes.
A Legacy of Strength
Hafez's achievement reflects her unwavering spirit and family support. "I'm lucky to have shared the trust of my husband [Ibrahim Ihab] and that of my family to be able to come this far," she said. Ranked 29th in sabre fencing globally and seeded 26th, Hafez previously represented Egypt in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Beyond fencing, Hafez has an impressive background as a former Egyptian national gymnastics champion and a clinical pathologist with a medical degree from Cairo University. Her story is not just about athletic success but also academic excellence.
