Port Of NEOM Strengthens Global Supply Chain Connectivity With Advanced Automation Technologies

The Port of NEOM has achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of fully automated, remote-controlled Ship-To-Shore (STS) and Electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (eRTG) cranes in Saudi Arabia. These advanced cranes are pivotal to the port's automation strategy, enhancing its capacity for high-volume operations. Located on the Red Sea, the port is a vital link on the East-West trade route.

Development at Port of NEOM is progressing rapidly ahead of Terminal 1's opening in 2026. Recent infrastructure achievements include completing a 900-meter quay wall and deepening the port channel to 18.5 meters. This allows the world's largest vessels from the Suez Canal to dock at Port of NEOM. Terminal 1 will also incorporate horizontal transport automation as part of its full automation goal.

NEOM Port Boosts Global Trade Connectivity

The remote-control feature of these cranes supports a future-ready workforce model. Operators can manage equipment from secure environments, promoting efficiency and safety. This aligns with NEOM's vision for a sustainable and innovative ecosystem, contributing to regional economic resilience and supporting Saudi Vision 2030.

Port of NEOM is committed to developing local talent alongside its infrastructure investments. A pioneering initiative is underway to train Saudi women for high-tech roles in crane operation. Ten participants from Tabuk Region are enrolled in a two-year program combining technical instruction, hands-on training, and mentorship.

Hajjer Alatawi, a trainee in this program, shared her insights: "This experience has shown me that port logistics is far more complex than just moving cargo; it is about teamwork, precision, and responsibility. Seeing more Saudi women entering this space gives me hope for a future where industries are defined by skills, not gender."

These technological advancements will significantly boost the port’s logistics capacity once operational. They aim to drive regional industrial growth, enhance supply chain resilience, open global market access, and create business opportunities.

Strategic Vision for Growth

Sean Kelly, Managing Director of Port of NEOM, stated: "The arrival of our first automated cranes marks a tangible milestone as we lay the foundations for an advanced, future-ready port. We are not only accelerating industrial growth in northwest Saudi Arabia but we are also setting a new benchmark for performance, efficiency, innovation and establishing a vital trade gateway for the Kingdom and the region beyond."

By equipping Saudi workers with high-tech skills, Port of NEOM supports NEOM’s vision as a catalyst for sustainable development. The focus on inclusivity aims to shape a diverse future for logistics and industry sectors.

This strategic approach ensures that Port of NEOM becomes an essential hub for smart trade while fostering local talent development in line with national goals.
