Pope Leo XIV Engages With Zayed Award Jury On Promoting Human Fraternity Principles

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV recently engaged with the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity 2026 jury at the Vatican. The discussion focused on advancing human fraternity principles and highlighted the award's role in promoting these ideals. The Pope emphasised that every individual and religion has a duty to foster fraternity, reflecting on the award's founding after the Document on Human Fraternity was signed by the late Pope Francis and His Eminence Ahmed Al-Tayeb.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity is an independent global accolade recognising individuals and organisations that promote peaceful coexistence. This year, its jury includes notable figures such as Charles Michel, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Catherine Russell, Saida Mirziyoyeva, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, and Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam. They convened in Rome as part of their annual tradition of meeting in various cities worldwide.

During the meeting, Pope Leo XIV expressed his delight in meeting the jury members. He acknowledged their dedication to human fraternity by stating that "they place their talents, vision and moral convictions at the noble service of human fraternity." The Pope also noted that the award embodies the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAE's Founding Father.

Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam highlighted that this gathering reinforced a shared belief in the award's role as a global platform for humanity. Catherine Russell pointed out that priorities include safeguarding vulnerable groups like children and fostering unity in a divided world. Cardinal Tolentino reiterated the Holy See’s commitment to the Document on Human Fraternity's values.

Moussa Faki Mahamat described the conversation as a reaffirmation of collective dedication to peace and dignity. Saida Mirziyoyeva mentioned it renewed hope for a future grounded in compassion and inclusivity. Charles Michel emphasised that dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding are crucial for progress.

The jury later reviewed nominations for 2026's edition. The honouree or honourees will receive US$1 million during a ceremony in Abu Dhabi on 4th February 2026, coinciding with International Day of Human Fraternity. Earlier meetings were held in Cairo with Al-Azhar's Grand Imam to evaluate nominations and engage with religious and cultural bodies.

This gathering underscores an ongoing commitment to fostering global dialogue and understanding through initiatives like the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity. By honouring those who champion these values, it aims to inspire others towards peaceful coexistence worldwide.
