Pomegranate City Initiative Enhances Al-Baha's Agricultural Economy And Cultivation Practices

The fertile lands of Al-Baha are embracing a new era in agriculture with the introduction of the "Pomegranate City" investment project. This initiative, unveiled by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, aims to make Al-Baha a key hub for pomegranate cultivation. The project aligns with Vision 2030 and seeks to boost local production while enhancing the region's agricultural economy.

Engineer Fahd bin Miftah Al-Zahrani, Director of the Ministry's branch in Al-Baha, stated that "Pomegranate City" spans 1.3 million square meters. The Cooperative Association of Pomegranates has been allocated 7,000 square meters to establish a nursery. This nursery will use local genetic stock to propagate trees, ensuring consistent quality and increased production.

Al-Baha Launches Pomegranate City Investment Project

Al-Zahrani highlighted the significance of pomegranates as a key agricultural product in Al-Baha. Known for their superior quality and nutritional benefits, these fruits thrive in the region's unique environment. This gives Al-Baha a comparative advantage in pomegranate cultivation. To support local farmers, workshops led by agricultural experts introduce modern technologies and farming practices.

The annual pomegranate festival is crucial for promoting the fruit and attracting visitors. It provides a marketing platform for farmers and helps solidify Al-Baha's reputation as a top producer of high-quality pomegranates. This status positively impacts the local economy, with the region producing an impressive 1,581 tons of pomegranates annually.

During an on-ground visit to pomegranate farms, Saudi Press Agency correspondents spoke with farmer Hussein bin Saeed Al-Zahrani. He shared insights into cultivating this cherished crop: "Pomegranate farming has been a tradition in Al-Baha for centuries, handed down from our grandfathers and fathers. It has long been a vital source of income for the people here," he said.

While traditional methods are still honoured, modern technologies have transformed how crops are grown and harvested. Beyond cultivation, marketing and distribution have evolved significantly due to young entrepreneurs from the region. E-commerce and specialized packaging companies enable Al-Baha pomegranates to reach customers both locally and internationally.

Innovation in Distribution

Farmers now benefit from apps and online platforms that streamline purchasing and delivery processes. These tools ensure that fresh fruit reaches buyers worldwide efficiently. "Pomegranate City" is more than just an agricultural investment; it celebrates Al-Baha's rich farming heritage while fostering innovation and sustainable growth.

This project is poised to make Al-Baha a prominent destination for high-quality pomegranates as it gains momentum. It enriches the local economy while honouring generations of tradition through its commitment to sustainable development.
