Tadej Pogačar Claims First Critérium Du Dauphiné Title Ahead Of Tour De France

Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates secured his inaugural Critérium du Dauphiné title with a commendable third-place finish in the final stage. The world champion successfully fended off Jonas Vingegaard from Visma-Lease a Bike during the last climb, finishing just behind stage victor Lenny Martinez of Bahrain Victorious. This triumph marked a successful week for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, who achieved three stage wins and their 45th victory this season, boosting their confidence for the Tour de France.

The concluding stage saw minimal changes in the general classification. Pogačar and Vingegaard maintained their dominance while others vied for podium spots. Florian Lipowitz of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe and Remco Evenepoel from Soudal Quick-Step competed fiercely for third place overall. Tobias Halland Johannessen from Uno-X Mobility initiated the first significant attack on the final ascent of the day.

Pogačar Wins Critérium du Dauphiné Title

Tim Wellens of UAE played a crucial role by increasing the pace to support Pogačar. Meanwhile, Martinez broke away to outpace Enric Mas and clinch the stage win at Col du Mont-Cenis. Vingegaard launched an attack with 6.6 km left, but Pogačar matched his pace, with both riders taking turns to extend their lead over the chasers.

Pogačar's victory is notable as he became the first reigning world champion to win the Dauphiné since Bernard Hinault in 1981. At the finish line, Vingegaard narrowly took second place on the stage, while Pogačar was satisfied with securing the overall victory. Reflecting on his performance, Pogačar stated, "After the 2020 Dauphiné, I remember how hard that week was. To come back with this form just before the Tour de France feels really good."

He further expressed satisfaction with overcoming challenges over the weekend, noting it was tougher than anticipated. He mentioned plans for some rest before focusing on time trial preparations without rushing into Tour de France readiness.

This achievement not only highlights Pogačar's skill but also boosts team morale ahead of upcoming competitions. The team's strategic efforts throughout the race were instrumental in securing this prestigious title and setting a positive tone for future events.
