Peru Explores Global Labour Practices at WGS 2024 to Elevate Productivity

Peru's participation in the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024 in Dubai has marked a significant step towards addressing its labour sector challenges. Daniel Maurate, the Minister of Labour and Employment Promotion of Peru, shared insights with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the nation's focus on learning from global best practices to enhance productivity and alleviate poverty. Despite Peru's rich resources, Maurate pointed out that human capital remains a critical area of development for the country.

During a panel discussion on the future of government human resources at the WGS, Maurate emphasized the global issue of job market alignment with qualifications. He noted that unlike some countries where overqualification is a problem, Peru and other Latin American nations face hurdles due to underqualification. The Minister underscored the urgency for educational reform to meet the demands of the digital age and the growing integration of artificial intelligence in governance.

Peru Seeks Labour Insights at WGS

The inadequacy of Peru's educational system to equip its citizens with essential digital skills has been identified as a stumbling block for both individuals seeking employment and companies in need of skilled personnel. To combat this, the Peruvian Government, in collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank, has initiated several scholarship programs aimed at enhancing digital competencies among the youth.

Furthermore, Maurate highlighted a unique initiative where companies contribute to the training process by specifying skill requirements. This approach not only benefits companies by creating a more competent workforce but also aids training entities through compensation and helps integrate disadvantaged individuals into the job market.

The 'My career' program was also introduced by the Ministry as a tool for young Peruvians to navigate career options. Through a digital platform, users can explore in-demand professions, potential earnings, and job availability, aiding informed career decisions.

Maurate expressed his appreciation for the WGS's focus on Latin America and stressed the importance of global human capital improvement. He believes that advancements in Latin America could have ripple effects worldwide. His discussions with UAE authorities aimed at learning from their development success stories to implement similar strategies in Peru underscored a proactive approach towards national development.

The Minister concluded by emphasizing the need for concerted efforts across Latin America to achieve sustainable development. The initiatives launched by Peru reflect a commitment to modernizing education and training systems to better prepare its workforce for future challenges.
