Pavegen Commits To Planting 1,000 Mangroves In UAE To Combat Climate Change
At the World Future Energy Summit, hosted by Masdar at ADNEC from 16-18 April 2024, Pavegen, a pioneer in renewable energy technology through human footsteps, has taken a significant step towards environmental conservation. The company announced the planting of 279 mangrove plants on the third day of the summit. This effort is part of a larger initiative to plant 1,000 mangrove trees around the UAE, underscoring the critical role of sustainable development and environmental conservation in combating climate change.
Laurence Kemball-Cook, CEO of Pavegen, shared insights with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) about how the company's innovative technology works. Attendees walking over Pavegen’s tiles generate energy, which is then used to illuminate LED lights. A display provides real-time feedback on the amount of energy produced. For this year's summit, the energy generated by footsteps is directly contributing to an environmental cause: planting mangrove trees in the UAE.

This initiative aligns with the UAE’s Climate Change Strategy, aiming to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030 to achieve climate neutrality. Mangroves play a crucial role in tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems by providing habitat for thousands of species, stabilizing shorelines, preventing erosion, and protecting land from waves and storms. Their capacity to absorb and capture carbon positions them as an essential ally in the fight against climate change.
"Our installation is more than a technological demonstration - it’s a call to action, inviting everyone to take a step towards improving our planet’s future," Kemball-Cook stated. This initiative reflects Pavegen's commitment to merging technological innovation with environmental stewardship, offering solutions that empower communities and promote sustainability. Through smart energy generation and ecosystem conservation, Pavegen is contributing to a more sustainable future.
The company's efforts at the World Future Energy Summit not only highlight the potential of human movement as a renewable energy source but also emphasize the importance of tangible actions in environmental conservation. By connecting technology with sustainability goals, Pavegen is demonstrating how innovative solutions can lead to real-world impacts in the fight against climate change.
