Successful Paediatric Tricuspid Valve Replacement Surgery Performed At Sheikh Khalifa Medical City

SEHA, part of PureHealth, the Middle East's largest healthcare group, has reported a successful paediatric heart surgery at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC). The procedure involved a minimally invasive tricuspid valve replacement in a 14-year-old boy, showcasing SKMC's advanced paediatric cardiology capabilities.

Mohamed, the young patient, suffered severe tricuspid valve damage after a road accident in 2019. Initially requiring a pacemaker, his heart rhythm stabilised over time, allowing its removal. However, his valve continued to worsen, causing severe narrowing and breathlessness.

Under Dr. Rizwan Rehman's care, Consultant Paediatric and Interventional Cardiologist at SKMC, the team opted for a novel 'valve-in-valve' method. This minimally invasive technique replaced the tricuspid valve via keyhole surgery, avoiding open-heart surgery.

The procedure was executed by a multidisciplinary team at SKMC with support from Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City's electrophysiology team. They successfully removed Mohamed's pacemaker system before implanting a 30.5 mm MyVal valve. Mohamed was discharged four days post-surgery.
