Saudi Arabia Enacts Over 50 Reforms To Enhance Women's Rights And Empowerment

Dr. Hala bint Mazyed Al-Tuwaijri, President of the Saudi Human Rights Commission, stressed the importance of empowering women as a key aspect of societal empowerment. She noted that this empowerment is a fundamental human right and has been a focus of the National Transformation Program under Vision 2030. Legislative changes have been implemented to support this goal.

During the 88th session of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women in Geneva, Dr. Al-Tuwaijri highlighted significant reforms in women's rights in Saudi Arabia. She stated, "This positive systematic change and the historic reforms and developments in protecting women's rights would not have been achieved without the political will embodied in the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, and the awareness of Saudi society."

Saudi Arabia's Commitment to Women's Rights

The Kingdom has seen substantial progress in its legal system concerning women's rights. Numerous laws have been revised or introduced to promote gender equality and equal opportunities. Over 50 reforms have been enacted, aligning with Saudi Arabia's cultural values.

Key legislative changes include amendments to travel documents and civil status systems to ensure gender equality. The social insurance system now sets a retirement age of 60 for both genders. Additionally, labour laws have been adjusted to provide equal rights and responsibilities for men and women.

Dr. Al-Tuwaijri mentioned that reforms also cover women's rights to education, health, and social protection. The Anti-Harassment Crime System was introduced as part of these efforts. Women's participation has expanded into various fields such as judicial, legal, military, security, sports, and culture.

The Kingdom remains committed to fulfilling its obligations under international human-rights conventions it has joined. This includes adhering to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. A special report from Saudi Arabia was submitted following Article 18 of this convention.

The ongoing progress reflects Saudi Arabia's dedication to enhancing women's roles within society while respecting its traditional values. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure comprehensive development across all sectors.
