A 3-Minute Drive: RTA Unveils New Bridge Connecting Hessa Street And Al Khail Road In Dubai
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has taken a significant stride in improving Dubai's infrastructure by inaugurating a two-lane bridge stretching 1,000 metres. This development, aimed at facilitating smoother traffic flow from Hessa Street to Al Khail Road, was unveiled on Sunday.
A notable reduction in travel time is anticipated, with journeys that previously took 15 minutes now reduced to a mere three minutes. This enhancement is part of the broader Hessa Street development project, which is currently 54% complete.

The new bridge is a pivotal component of the Hessa Street development project, which spans from the intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to the junction with Al Khail Road, covering a distance of 4.5 km. This project is a testament to Dubai's commitment to developing its road network infrastructure, under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, and the supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. It aims to accommodate the needs of urban development and population growth in the region.

The project includes the enhancement of four major intersections along Hessa Street. These improvements are scheduled to be fully implemented by the fourth quarter of 2025. The goal is to streamline traffic, significantly reduce congestion, and facilitate easier access to Dubai's city centre and Dubai International Airport.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, highlighted the project's scale and its alignment with Dubai's developmental directives. "The Hessa Street Development Project...comes in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum...to complete the development of the road network infrastructure to keep pace with the continuous development witnessed by the Emirate of Dubai," he stated. The project will double the road's capacity, allowing it to handle 8,000 vehicles per hour, and includes the introduction of a 13.5 km bicycle lane.
The enhanced intersections are designed to facilitate smoother transitions between major roads. This includes a two-lane directional ramp at the intersection of Hessa Street with Sheikh Zayed Road, an increase in lane numbers at the intersection with First Al Khail Street, and significant improvements at the intersections with Al Asayel Street and Al Khail Street. These developments are integral to managing the expected population growth in the areas served by the project, projected to exceed 640,000 by 2030.
Additionally, the project places a strong emphasis on sustainable urban mobility by introducing bicycle and electric scooter tracks. These tracks, extending for 13.5 km, link Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills areas through Hessa Street, serving numerous residential locations. The inclusion of two uniquely designed bridges for bicycles and pedestrians highlights Dubai's commitment to promoting eco-friendly transportation options.
The Hessa Street development project not only aims to enhance road capacity and reduce travel times but also significantly contributes to the urban landscape of Dubai. By accommodating up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions—an increase of 100%—the project underscores Dubai's forward-thinking approach to urban planning and mobility.
As the project progresses, residents and commuters in Dubai can look forward to a more connected, accessible, and efficient city infrastructure. The RTA's efforts to expand and improve the city's road network reflect a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its inhabitants and supporting Dubai's ongoing urban development.
