OpenAI, Oracle, And SoftBank Announce Five New AI Data Centres In The United States

OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have revealed plans for five new AI data centre locations in the US under OpenAI's Stargate platform. These sites will join the main campus in Abilene, Texas, and ongoing projects with CoreWeave. The initiative aims to expand Stargate's capacity to nearly 7 gigawatts and increase investment to over $400 billion within three years.

The companies are on track to meet their $500 billion, 10-gigawatt target by the end of 2025. In July, OpenAI and Oracle agreed to add up to 4.5 gigawatts of Stargate capacity. This collaboration is projected to result in an investment exceeding $300 billion over five years.

Three of the new data centres will be located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a yet-to-be-announced Midwest location. Additionally, there is potential for an extra 600 megawatts near Abilene. These projects could create over 25,000 onsite jobs and many more nationwide.

SoftBank and OpenAI are developing two other sites expected to reach 1.5 gigawatts within 18 months. Construction has started on an advanced data centre in Lordstown, Ohio, set to be operational next year. Another site in Milam County, Texas, will be built with SB Energy from SoftBank Group.

These facilities aim to enhance development speed, scalability, and cost efficiency. This marks the first phase of site selections with more US locations anticipated as they surpass the $500 billion investment goal.

The new Oracle-developed Stargate sites will integrate with the Abilene campus already active on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
