Ons Jabeur Advances To Quarter-Finals After Defeating Wakana Sonobe At Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open

Ons Jabeur advanced to the quarter-finals of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open after defeating 17-year-old Wakana Sonobe in straight sets. This victory sets up an exciting match against defending champion Elena Rybakina, who overcame Katie Volynets. Meanwhile, Ashlyn Krueger staged a remarkable comeback to defeat last year's runner-up Daria Kasatkina, joining Belinda Bencic, Marketa Vondrousova, Leylah Fernandez, Linda Noskova, and Magda Linette in the last eight.

Jabeur's journey to the last 16 included a strong performance against Jelena Ostapenko. However, she faced a different challenge with rising star Sonobe. Sonobe had previously secured two qualifying wins before defeating Yue Yan in the Round of 32. Despite starting confidently, Sonobe's lack of experience showed as she lost her last three service games in the first set.

Jabeur Defeats Sonobe in Abu Dhabi Open

In the second set, Sonobe broke Jabeur immediately. However, Jabeur quickly regained control and dictated play, breaking Sonobe twice to secure a 6-3, 6-3 win. This victory leads to an exciting rematch with Rybakina, reminiscent of their 2022 Wimbledon final encounter. Jabeur commented on the upcoming match: "It’s going to be a tough match. Elena plays really well, and I know she loves playing here on this surface. I will just try to do my best, and focus on myself, and what I can do better on the court."

Rybakina had a challenging start against Volynets but managed to turn things around after losing the first set 6-2. She responded with determination, winning the next two sets 6-4 each. This comeback marks a strong start for her title defense. In another dominant display, Bencic defeated Kudermetova 6-0, 6-0 in just over an hour.

Bencic will now face Vondrousova in the quarter-finals after Vondrousova's solid win over Yulia Putintseva. Fernandez also secured her spot by defeating Lulu Sun comfortably. Although Sun improved in the second set, Fernandez's impressive shots led her to a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Fernandez is set to face Krueger next.

Krueger showcased resilience by overcoming Kasatkina despite losing the first set heavily at 1-6. She bounced back with scores of 7-5 and 6-4 to claim victory. The upcoming match between Fernandez and Krueger promises excitement as both are emerging talents in tennis.

Doubles Action Highlights

In doubles action today, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova were defeated by Heather Watson and Luisa Stefani in straight sets (6-4, 6-4). Mattek-Sands was last year's doubles champion alongside Sofia Kenin but couldn't replicate that success this time around.

The match between Timea Babos/Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Hao Ching-Chan/Liudmila Samsonova ended with Babos/Melichar-Martinez dominating a one-sided tie-breaker at 10-1 after an evenly contested game until then.

Ulrikke Eikeri/Makoto Ninomiya also progressed into quarter-finals following their convincing win over Desirae Krawczyk/Giuliana Olmos (6-4; 6-0). All four singles quarter-final matches will take place tomorrow on Stadium Court where Jabeur versus Rybakina stands out as one of most anticipated encounters given their past meetings including Wimbledon final clash won by Rybakina last year.

The tournament has seen impressive performances from players like Vondrousova and Bencic so far making their upcoming clash intriguing while Fernandez versus Krueger offers chance witness young talents competing for semi-final spot.
