Oman's Turtle Commando Program Rescues Over 154,000 Turtles, Tackles Marine Waste

The Environment Authority (EA) celebrated the conclusion of the third edition of its 'Turtle Commando' programme this Monday, underscoring its dedication to the protection of sea turtles. The programme, which has just announced its fourth edition under the patronage of H E Yaqoub bin Khalfan al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, has become a pivotal initiative for wildlife conservation in Oman.

This year, the programme witnessed the participation of over 410 volunteers, who together ran 35,054 awareness campaigns and programmes. These efforts focused on highlighting the critical importance of sea turtles and disseminating knowledge about the laws and regulations that protect the Masirah Island and Ras al Hadd Turtle Reserve.

Oman Saves 154 000 Turtles

Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of EA, lauded Oman's significant environmental advancements on an international scale, crediting these successes to the combined efforts of the public, private, and civil society sectors, as well as the participation of concerned citizens.

The third campaign of the Turtle Commando programme achieved notable results, including the removal of 17 tonnes of plastic waste, such as bags and nets, from the beaches of Masirah Island and Ras al Hadd. Additionally, the programme was instrumental in rescuing 68 large nesting sea turtles and 88,216 small turtles.

Moreover, the initiative has actively engaged in eco-tourism, participating in various events and exhibitions to further raise awareness on the necessity of turtle protection. Over the past three years, the programme has attracted 1,073 volunteers, who have collectively educated 84,719 visitors to the reserve. An impressive tally of 154,048 small turtles and 240 large turtles have been rescued, highlighting the substantial impact of the programme. Furthermore, around 19 tonnes of nets and marine waste have been collected, demonstrating the comprehensive approach taken towards environmental conservation.

The Turtle Commando programme also prioritises community involvement, offering employment opportunities and organising eco-tourism activities during official holidays. A landmark achievement includes the largest cleaning campaign on Masirah Island, which saw the participation of over 250 volunteers, showcasing the programme's extensive reach and influence.

Spanning six months, the third edition of the Turtle Commando programme provided a platform for volunteers from across Oman to engage in various conservation activities. These ranged from monitoring turtle populations and educating visitors, to deterring violators and conducting light-free campaigns, all contributing to a unique and enriching experience for everyone involved.

The continued success and expansion of the Turtle Commando programme underscore Oman's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism. As the programme enters its fourth edition, it remains a beacon of hope for the preservation of sea turtles and their habitats, ensuring a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
