Oman Plans First Rocket Launch In December 2024, Establishing A New Space Sector In MENA

As Oman gears up to launch its first rocket by the year's end, the nation is poised to establish a pioneering presence in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region space sector. Dr. Saoud al Shoaili, the Director-General and Head of the National Space Programme at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT), has highlighted the strategic advantage of Oman's geographic location near the equator. This positioning facilitates more efficient satellite launches, requiring less fuel and significantly reducing costs.

Dr. al Shoaili, in his discussion with Middle East Space Monitor, underscored the economic and strategic benefits that come with the establishment of the Etlaq spaceport. He stated, "The aim for Etlaq is to have its first launch by the end of this year, in December." He further elaborated on the importance of Oman's equatorial proximity, which not only economizes fuel use but also makes satellite orbits more accessible, offering a competitive edge in the global space launch market.

The Etlaq spaceport, spearheaded by the Omani space company National Aerospace Services Company (Nascom), stands as a significant private initiative within the MTCIT's National Space Programme. Dr. al Shoaili also emphasized the broader vision for the spaceport, which extends beyond launching small sound rockets. He envisions Etlaq evolving into a fully operational spaceport, attracting a growing number of companies drawn by the economic and strategic advantages of launching from Oman. "As more companies realise the economic benefits of launching from Oman — such as lower costs and the security offered by our political neutrality — they may choose Oman over other locations for their launches. Our neutrality ensures that no foreign entity can interfere with or control their assets," he explained.
