Oman Launches First Bus Service To Saudi, Boosting Regional Ties

Omani capital, Muscat has achieved a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity with the initiation of its inaugural international passenger bus service to Saudi Arabia's capital city, Riyadh, from today. This service aims to improve travel between Oman and Saudi Arabia significantly, utilizing the Empty Quarter road for a direct link between the two countries.

Rashid al Khanjary, the Owner of Al Khanjary Transport, in a conversation with the Observer, detailed the operational aspects of this novel service. "The bus will depart daily from Muscat at 6 am and from Riyadh (Azizia area) at 5 pm. The duration of the journey is anticipated to be between 18 to 20 hours, depending on immigration and border formalities. We will adjust Riyadh departure times as per passenger feedback," he stated.

Designed to ease travel, the service includes three stops within Oman - Ruwi, Nizwa, and Ibri. In Saudi Arabia, the route will make a stop at Dammam en route to the Saudi capital. This strategic inclusion aims to broaden accessibility and convenience for passengers travelling to and from these cities.

Affordable and Accessible Travel Options

The promotional fare for a one-way trip, available until the end of the month, is set at RO25 or SR250. This offers a cost-effective option for travellers. Post-promotion, the fare will adjust to RO35 or SR350. The initiative is focused on making international travel between Oman and Saudi Arabia more accessible and fostering stronger ties between the two nations.

Al Khanjary provided further insights into the operational details, mentioning, "The Saudi authorities have stipulated a minimum of 25 passengers per bus." He emphasized the additional distance via Dammam but assured that the quality of the dual carriageway would ensure a smooth journey. For enhanced comfort, the service will include two drivers and scheduled rest stops.

Visa Information and Eligibility

The service is designed to cater to both citizens and expatriates, offering an alternative mode of international travel. Expatriates required to obtain a visa can do so, while certain nationals may benefit from visa-on-arrival options or other exemptions, streamlining the travel process significantly.

This development is set to redefine cross-border travel between Oman and Saudi Arabia, offering a reliable, comfortable, and affordable travel option. As regional connectivity continues to expand, such services are crucial in narrowing distances and enhancing relations between neighbouring countries.
