Oman Launches Net Zero Centre To Drive Carbon Neutrality By 2050

Oman has inaugurated the Oman Net Zero Centre, signaling a significant milestone in its journey towards a carbon-neutral future by 2050. This initiative, reported by Muscat Daily, aligns with the Sultanate's aspirations to enhance energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and foster sustainable development across various sectors.

Under the leadership of Salim Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, this strategic move embodies the Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, marking a concerted effort to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability within the nation.

The formation of the Oman Net Zero Centre is a direct response to His Majesty's call for a dedicated body to supervise and expedite the nation's net-zero objectives. "The decision to establish Oman Net Zero Centre is part of efforts to implement His Majesty's directives to supervise and follow up on net-zero plans and programmes," Aufi emphasized. Through its establishment, Oman aims to enhance its energy efficiency and assist various entities in their transition towards carbon neutrality by the mid-21st century.

To oversee the ambitious target effectively, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals has set up a steering committee. Chaired by the Minister himself, the committee boasts membership from high-ranking officials across numerous governmental departments, including the foreign, finance, and economy ministries, alongside representatives from the Environment Authority and Oman Investment Authority. This diverse team is tasked with the approval of strategic plans, endorsement of net-zero projects, and monitoring the operational efficiency of the Oman Net Zero Centre.

A key aspect of the centre's mandate involves the management and certification of carbon, hydrogen, and low-carbon products. It aims to rigorously review and audit certification applications, oversee carbon certificate trading within the Sultanate, and ensure adherence to global carbon credit standards. By doing so, Oman is not only reinforcing its environmental commitments but also positioning itself as a leader in the certification and trading of green commodities.

The Oman Net Zero Centre will play a pivotal role in coordinating national efforts to enhance energy consumption efficiency. It will regularly evaluate energy usage across different sectors, recommending adjustments when necessary in collaboration with pertinent authorities.
