Oman To Celebrate World Metrology Day Today With A Focus On Sustainability
This year's World Metrology Day theme, 'Measuring Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow,’ underscores the pivotal role of metrology in steering the world towards a sustainable future. Imad bin Khamis Al Shukaili, Director General of the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology (DGSM) at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), highlighted the importance of metrology—the science of measurement—in providing essential data for understanding and mitigating the environmental, economic, and social impacts of human activities.
Al Shukaili pointed out the significant ways in which metrology contributes to sustainability. Firstly, it enhances the efficiency of natural resource use, including water, energy, and raw materials. By applying precise measurement and monitoring, areas for improvement can be identified, thereby reducing waste and resource consumption. Metrology's role in improving the accuracy and efficiency of industrial processes and products also leads to minimized resource and energy usage, further decreasing waste production.
Promoting Safety and Innovation
Furthermore, Al Shukaili emphasized that metrology is crucial for ensuring the quality and safety of products and services. Accurate measurements reduce the risk of pollution and accidents, improving public health and protecting the environment. Metrology drives innovation and development across various sectors by developing new environmental data measurement techniques and creating sustainable, efficient products and services. It also informs decisions and policies towards sustainability by providing precise data on the environmental and economic impacts of human activities.
Commitment to Global Standards
The MoCIIP, through the DGSM, aims to strengthen Oman's metrology infrastructure and ensure the reliability of measurement results in accordance with international standards. This includes verifying the accuracy of new measurement technologies and participating in comparisons coordinated with the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). The DGSM is also responsible for enforcing the Metrology and Standards Law by overseeing most weighing and measuring devices under legal control in Oman, ensuring their accuracy and reliability.
World Metrology Day, celebrated annually on May 20 (today), commemorates the signing of the Treaty of the Metre in 1875, marking a commitment to global measurement standardization. Oman's participation in the Meter Convention since 2013 underscores its active engagement in international efforts to standardize measurements, highlighting the ongoing relevance of these goals for global cooperation and sustainability.
The celebration of World Metrology Day not only reflects on the historical significance of international measurement cooperation but also emphasizes the critical role of metrology in achieving a sustainable tomorrow. Through enhancing resource efficiency, promoting safety and innovation, and committing to global standards, metrology remains at the forefront of efforts to build a sustainable future for Oman and the world.
