Oman Airports Record 17% Surge In Passengers, Cementing Its Travel Hub Status
Oman's aviation sector has seen a significant upswing in passenger traffic, with a 16.8% increase reported by the end of March 2024, reaching 3,840,354 passengers, up from 3,287,015 during the same timeframe in 2023. This surge in traffic highlights the growing appeal of Oman as a travel destination and a pivotal hub for international connectivity.
The National Centre for Statistics and Information provided preliminary statistics showcasing a notable rise in passenger numbers and flight operations across Omani airports. Muscat International Airport, the country's flagship airport, alone accounted for a substantial portion of this growth.
Muscat International Airport witnessed an impressive 17.7% increase in passenger traffic, handling 3,482,325 passengers. The airport's flight operations also saw a healthy growth, with a 13.8% increase in flights, totaling 25,204 by the end of March 2024. International flights dominated the airport's operations, with 23,237 flights carrying 3,232,76 passengers, complemented by 1,967 domestic flights that transported 250,249 passengers.
Indian nationals were the top passengers at Muscat International Airport, with 79,810 arrivals and 77,646 departures during this period. Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals also contributed significantly to the airport's passenger volume, underscoring the diverse demographic that Oman attracts.
Salalah Airport's Steady Performance
Salalah Airport, another key player in Oman's aviation landscape, served 325,035 passengers, marking a 6.7% increase. The airport handled a total of 2,288 flights, with both international and domestic flights showing balanced growth. Specifically, the airport accommodated 1,218 international and 1,070 domestic flights, highlighting its role in facilitating travel within Oman and beyond.
Emerging Airports Show Potential
Sohar and Duqm airports, though smaller in scale compared to Muscat and Salalah, showed promising activity. Sohar Airport catered to 17,462 passengers across 154 flights, and Duqm Airport served 15,532 passengers on 156 flights. These numbers, though modest, are indicative of the potential for growth in Oman's regional airports.
The increase in passenger traffic and flight operations across Omani airports is a positive indicator of the country's expanding aviation sector.
