OIC Summit In Banjul Issues Declaration For Unity And Sustainable Development
The recent gathering of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) leaders in Banjul, The Gambia, for the 15th Islamic Summit Conference, marked a significant moment in the pursuit of unity, solidarity, and sustainable development within the Muslim world. The summit, themed "Enhancing unity and solidarity through dialogue for sustainable development," concluded with the adoption of the Banjul Declaration, a document that underscores the collective commitment of OIC member states to the organization's foundational principles and objectives.
At the heart of the declaration is a reaffirmation of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity of member states, non-interference in internal affairs, and peaceful dispute resolution. The leaders also spotlighted the critical roles of education, human rights, tolerance, and moderation as pillars for achieving sustainable development. A significant emphasis was placed on fostering inter-religious and intercultural dialogue to combat racism, discrimination, extremism, and incitement to hatred.

One of the declaration's focal points was the expression of solidarity with the people of Gaza Strip. The OIC leaders condemned Israeli aggression and its humanitarian impact, urging immediate international action to halt crimes in Gaza. They also reiterated support for the Palestinian people's rights, including establishing a state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The declaration also highlighted concerns over the situation in Kashmir, calling for the implementation of UN resolutions to enable self-determination for its people. The persecution of Muslims and other minorities in India was addressed, with a call for protection of their lives and properties. Efforts to combat Islamophobia and religious intolerance received commendation from the leaders.
Regional issues were not overlooked, with expressions of support for a peaceful Afghanistan and solidarity with countries in the Sahel region facing security and humanitarian challenges. The Gambia's efforts at the International Court of Justice concerning Rohingya Muslims were lauded, alongside support for an "International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica."
The burning of copies of the Holy Quran in some European countries was condemned by OIC leaders who called for measures to prevent such acts and counter Islamophobia. They stressed promoting tolerance, dialogue, and cooperation among civilizations to address racism, discrimination, and religious hatred. The importance of protecting rights across various demographics was underscored.
Addressing global challenges like water scarcity was identified as crucial, especially in arid countries. The outcomes of the International Conference on Women in Islam hosted by Saudi Arabia were welcomed, highlighting girls' education and women's rights to work.
In conclusion, Saudi Arabia was commended for its generous support towards OIC objectives and Islamic nations at large. Gratitude was also extended to The Gambia for hosting a successful conference aimed at fostering noble goals for the Muslim Ummah and humanity.
