50th OIC Council Of Foreign Ministers Session Kicks Off In Cameroon

The 50th session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers began today in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The event was inaugurated by Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Dion Ngute on behalf of President Paul Biya. In his speech, he emphasised Cameroon's commitment to the OIC and highlighted the importance of solidarity among member states to tackle issues like poverty, climate change, and terrorism.

OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha addressed the opening session, stating, "The issue of Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif is witnessing dangerous developments that pose a challenge to the international community in general and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in particular." He pointed out that Israeli forces continue their extensive military aggression against Gaza and other Palestinian territories, causing thousands of casualties.

Taha affirmed the OIC's dedication to addressing the severe impact of Israeli aggression on Palestinians. He stressed the organisation's role in supporting Palestinian resilience and defending their legitimate rights. The situation in Palestine remains a critical concern for the OIC, requiring ongoing international attention and intervention.

In his remarks, Taha also discussed efforts in Afghanistan regarding bans on girls' education and women's participation in public life. He mentioned ongoing dialogues with Afghanistan’s de facto government to lift these bans. Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit and other delegations have been actively engaging with Afghan authorities to address these issues.

Taha reviewed developments related to Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting efforts by OIC special envoy Yousef Al-Doubeay. He reaffirmed the OIC's support for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity following its conflict with Armenia. The end of armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia was welcomed, along with Azerbaijan’s restored sovereignty within internationally recognised borders.

The Secretary-General also addressed challenges in the Sahel region and Lake Chad Basin. He called for greater solidarity with affected populations and mentioned preparations for a Donors' Conference scheduled for October 26 at OIC headquarters in Jeddah. This conference aims to support displaced persons and refugees from these regions.

Combating Islamophobia and Promoting Dialogue

Taha highlighted efforts to combat terrorism, Islamophobia, and religious hatred while promoting interfaith dialogue. Ambassador Mehmet Paçaci will soon assume duties as the special envoy for combating Islamophobia. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to protect Muslim communities worldwide.

On economic matters, Taha noted the significance of opening the OIC's Labor Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan. This centre aims to address development challenges within this sector. Additionally, he mentioned the inaugural session of the General Assembly of the Islamic Halal Accreditation Forum set for November 2023 in Makkah, which seeks to enhance communication among accreditation entities within the halal industry.

Climate Change Initiatives

Taha confirmed that the OIC is actively seeking cooperation opportunities among member states concerning climate change and water management. He commended Azerbaijan for hosting COP-29 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in November 2024.

The session underscored various global issues requiring collective action from OIC member states. From addressing regional conflicts to combating climate change, these discussions aim to foster unity and effective solutions among Islamic nations.
