OIC Reaffirms Commitment To Empowering Women's Leadership In Science And Technology
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is dedicated to empowering women, especially in science and technology, within its member states. This dedication was highlighted during the eighth session of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women in Cairo, Egypt, in 2021. A resolution was adopted to promote women's education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
In a statement for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, the OIC emphasised its Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women (OPAAW). This strategic framework aims to boost women's participation in various sectors, including science and technology. It stresses equal opportunities in education, employment, and leadership roles.

The OIC Women Development Organization (WDO), based in Cairo, plays a crucial role in advancing women's empowerment. It implements policies and initiatives that enhance women's participation in scientific fields. The Jeddah Document on Women's Rights in Islam further supports this cause.
This document was adopted at the International Conference on Women in Islam held from November 6 to 8, 2023. Co-organized by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the OIC General Secretariat, it underscores the importance of empowering women across all sectors.
OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha urged member states and relevant institutions to intensify efforts for full participation of women and girls in science and technology. He stressed enabling them to assume leadership roles within these fields.
Taha highlighted the OIC's commitment to closing the gender gap in science and technology. The aim is to create an environment where women and girls can excel, contribute to sustainable development, and improve societal well-being.
